Chad Humston – Two Nights at Knoxville This Week!

(Bill W) June 2, 2011 – A busy Memorial Day weekend saw the Mark Burch Motorsports #1m team and driver Chad Humston recorded three top seven finishes. The action involved two Nebraska shows and one and the Knoxville Raceway in Iowa. This weekend, the 360’s run Friday and Saturday at Knoxville, and the team plans to return.
Things started at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska on Thursday. Chad started towards the rear of his ASCS-Midwest heat race and finished fifth. “Before the race, I felt out the high side of turn three,” he says. “Going up there wasn’t going to be a good situation, so I decided to run under the hole that is always there. We weren’t bad, but we weren’t great either. We found out why afterwards. The left front shock was not hooked up when we were changing bars and stuff…just one of those things that get overlooked once in a while.”
The finish put him in the main event, where he started in row seven. “We made the feature, so the heat wasn’t terrible,” says Chad. “The team had the car working pretty well. It was fun running with the guys that we were running with. When you know they’ll race you clean, it makes it fun.”
The Giltner, Nebraska dispatched several cars in his move forward before settling early into seventh on a one-lane track. “We were able to gain several spots at the beginning before it rubbered up,” he says. “That was a great car that the team had under me.”
Chad has experience in Victory Lane at the Junction Motor Speedway near McCool Junction, and that’s where Friday’s action moved. He would finish second from row two in the heat. “We started behind (Danny) Lasoski and we ended up second behind him,” he says. “He was running a really good line that made it difficult to pass him. It got us to the redraw.”
He would draw in the third row and finish sixth. “That draw was as fair as it gets,” says Chad. “We were fifth to draw, and we drew the third row. I think you should start where you earn your points anyway. We tried something a little different than normal and it didn’t pay off the way we thought it would.”
The team towed east to Knoxville where Chad timed in seventh on a rough track. “You could tell something was wrong with the track right away,” he says. “We wanted to run the bottom, but it was rough down there and we couldn’t do it. We didn’t end up with the time we wanted.”
A heat break moved him up to the front row, and he beat some good cars to record a win. “We were supposed to start outside of row two, but Ricky Montgomery got out late, so that gave us the front row,” says Chad. “We got a jump on Billy (Alley) and had a good race, and then Clint Garner came on the last two laps. After a yellow, I moved down a bit to where he was running and we were able to hold on.”
Though he started outside of row two, Chad had some flashbacks to an ugly incident in early May to start a Knoxville feature. “I would call it a solid finish with a rocky start,” he said of Saturday’s run. “There were only three cars in front of me, but it looked like there were cars everywhere. If I was in the back or the middle of the field, I would have probably slowed down a lot.”
Chad was able to maintain a solid fourth place finish on a track that was tough to tame. “We had a good car again,” he says. “We were really close to perfect. We had a good race with Matt Moro for a couple of laps. We were battling with Russ Hall early, and Dennis Moore later on. It was good clean racing, and a solid finish.”
The driver appreciates the time he spends with the Mark Burch Motorsports race team. “We’re always able to talk about things as a team on the way home,” he says. “We figured out what we should have done differently, and what we’ll do next week. That’s what we do. We talk about it, and focus on our next race. We’ll be back at Knoxville Friday and Saturday, and we’re looking to grab a win or two.”
