Van Engen Tops Field of 36 B-mods

85 race cars made their way to Rapid Speedway on Friday night, making for a great field of talented drivers in every class. The Sportsmans feature saw another dominating performance by the last event’s winner, Roger DeBoer. DeBoer charged to the early lead and never looked back, picking up his second trophy of the season. The USRA Hobby Stock main event saw 16 cars take the initial green flag, but after a flurry of wrecks mid-race, only 7 cars finished the race. Dylan Vandentop carried over his momentum from his heat race to jump to the early lead in the feature, leading the first handful of laps. Chad Lonneman charged up from the twelfth starting position to take the lead from Vandentop halfway through the feature. After many wrecks, Dustin Gulbrandson and Dylan Fitzpatrack were lurking behind Lonneman, but Lonneman was not flustered, picking up his second victory of the season at Rapid Speedway. The USRA Stock Car feature was next, and the crowd saw another clinic put on by Elijah Zevenbergen. Zevenbergen quickly made his way to third and patiently waited for a hole to get by leaders Colby Klaassen and Scott Overgaard. Zevenbergen’s win was his third in a row at Rapid Speedway and fifth on the season. 36 USRA B-mods were looking to be top-dog with many talented drivers taking on Rapid Speedway. Thor Anderson shot out to the early lead, but Mitch Van Engen was on a mission, taking the lead on lap three. Van Engen pulled away on the restarts and might have had a challenge if the race was lengthened a couple laps from Tyler Johnson, but the ‘Doon Dominator’ was able to take the checkered flag, making it look easy. Kevin Joachim finished second, with Tyler Johnson rounding out the podium. There is no shortage of special events coming up at Rapid Speedway. First, July 15 will feature the powerful and fast Wissota Late Models, as well as the Sportsman Special. Only 4 days later, July 19, the Lyon County Fairgrounds will be hosting the Randy Droescher Memorial, featuring 360 sprint cars and the LMSS Touring Series. The following Friday, July 22, grandstand admission is FREE for EVERYONE!
