SCHRADER SEES CHECKERED CLEARLY AS RACING IS FOGGED OUT AT MERRITTVILLE

THOROLD, Ontario (May 18th, 2024) … What started as a beautiful night on a Long Weekend in the Niagara Region turned into a short night when thick fogged rolled into Merrittville Speedway. While Auto FX Graphics and Signs night had to be cut short, the Big Bike Giveaway was still completed, sending many kids home happy. In total 122 new bicycles were given away, thanks to the generosity of our drivers, teams, track staff and fans. The Canadian Vs. UMP Modified feature was also completed with the win going to Ken Schrader who travelled from Dittmer, Missouri to race in Canada. Features for the Commercial Auto Electric 358 Modifieds, Baron Roofing/Semenuk’s Esso DIRTcar Sportsman, Rona Doidge Modified Lites, and Vansickle PetValu/PV on the Lane 4 Cylinders will be made up on Saturday May 25th.

The UMP vs. Canadian Modifieds feature was the only race that was able to be completed before fog suspended competition. Greg Belyea and Ken Schrader lead the field to green. As fog conditions worsened, the field was consulted before taking the green as to whether they felt safe enough to run. With the thumbs given by the field, and the feature shortened to 20 laps from its originally scheduled 25, the green was waved, and Schrader took off to the lead early. On lap 8, 3 cars tangled in turn 2 bringing the field under yellow. After another round of thumbs up from most of the field, green conditions returned, with Schrader once again driving off and this time taking the checkered flag. Belyea was second with Joe Brosseau, Shawn Gregory, and Dennis Lunger Jr. completing the top 5.

Racing action returns on Monday May 20th to Canada’s Oldest Dirt Track with the 10th running of the Brian Stevens Memorial presented by RCR Performance Golf Cart Sales and Service. The 358 Modifieds will be highlighted with the 44-lap Brian Stevens Memorial, plus the Pole Dash. Also on the card will be the annual visit by the Vanderlaan Building Products NLMA Late Models, Hoosier Stocks, Mod Lites, and 4 Cylinders. The night will also celebrate Victoria Day, with Fireworks in the sky. Bobcat of Hamilton has increased the purse by an additional $2500.00.

Brian Stevens was a long-time modified racer and champion at Merrittville, Humberstone and Ransomville. His career spanned from the mid 1970's right up until 2010 and he scored nearly 150 feature wins. Brian passed away in February 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer.
