CONDON, RANDO, & SCOFIELD TAKE FEATURE WINS AT FONDA BEFORE RAIN CANCELS THE REMAINDER OF THE RACING PROGRAM

By: Ron Szczerba

Fonda, NY – Saturday evening was supposed to be “Opening Day” for the 73rd season of racing at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway. Light rain throughout most of the qualifying heat races was not a factor as the cars stayed on track and raced through it until a steadier rain forced the cancellation of the remainder of the racing program just after the last heat race was completed.

Next Saturday, May 4 the prestigious Lou Lazzaro Memorial will be run for the Amsterdam Truck Center Modifieds along with all other regular divisions with the rained out Fonda Fair Four Cylinder feature from 4/27 to be added.

Other make up dates from 4/27 Glover Insurance Night are Amsterdam Truck Center Modifieds on Dollar Night May 11, Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman on May 25, and the Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman and Leatherstocking Pro Stocks on June 1.

Three of the four feature events were run for the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series (MVVDMS) on Saturday evening before the rain came in with Curtis Condon (Late Model), Joe Rando (Mystique), and Bryan Scofield (Antique) the winners of those three events with the Modified/Sportsman feature being rescheduled to a later date.

Saturday evening was a special racing program for the MVVDMS honoring Frank Trinkhaus with the entire Vintage program labeled as the Frank Trinkaus Memorial. Thanks to Frank’s daughter Debbie and Ron Moshier, memorabilia on Trinkhaus was displayed at the Fonda Speedway Hall of Fame & Museum on Saturday evening according to the Fonda Speedway Hall of Fame & Museum Facebook page.

Trinkhaus was the co-promoter of the former Sidney (New York) Speedway back in 1953 when Fonda Speedway promoter Ed Fuez approached him in order to buy some bleachers for the “Track of Champions” according to the book Fonda! He would go on to become a Hall of Fame Fonda Speedway car owner with eight different drivers piloting the Trinkhaus yellow and blue #62 to Fonda Speedway victory lane between 1956 through 1970.

Those eight drivers included George Gallup, Steve Danish, Pete Corey, Ken Shoemaker, Jeep Herbert, Irv Taylor, Don Wayman, and Lee Millington. Trinkhaus was inducted into the New York State Stock Car Association (NYSSCA) Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Fonda Speedway Hall of Fame in 2017.

If you are a race fan that gets to the track early, be sure to check out the Fonda Speedway Museum & Hall of Fame which is located on the Fonda Fairgrounds at the rear of the parking area going down towards turn four. The museum is open from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on race days and admission is free!

All races at Fonda Speedway – will be broadcast live on FloRacing (www.floracing.tv) as part of the $150 annual subscription.
