Coleman adds his mark, Gemmill and Chambers USRA winners, Esparza goes back-to-back

Memorial Day weekend is often called the greatest weekend in motorsports. Local tracks around the country at full song, and Sunday’s “big league” trifecta of F1’s Monaco Grand Prix, Indy Car’s Indianapolis 500, and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 all make up a motorsport fans favorite weekend of the year. But, more importantly, it is a time for all to pause and salute those made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation to protect the freedom’s we all enjoy today. After doing that very thing during opening ceremonies Saturday night, 81 Speedway’s weekly racing series action kicked off the weekend in a big way.

Arguably the biggest story line of the night, Chevy Coleman added a new mark to his family’s long history at 81 Speedway, picking up his first career modified win during Two M Motorsports and Machine Rookie Modified action. Piloting his machine to nearly a full second lead early, multiple caution flags erased Coleman’s lead and made late race restarts extremely uncomfortable for driver of the No. 41 car.

During a second green-white-checker attempt, Dillion Moler looked to spoil the party racing to Coleman’s inside at the exit of turn two. Moler crossed over the nose of Coleman’s car as the pair raced down the back straight away while Coleman then looked to set up a pass to retake the lead from the No. 78d at the entry of turn 3, just before the Hoover Mower Sales caution lights blinked on once again.

The race’s final restart saw Coleman protect the bottom of the Speedway and go largely unchallenged to the checkers, while Moler and Jeremy Sigler raced side by side finishing second and third. Wichita’s Billy Hardin finished fourth, while Valley Center’s Dakota Dale completed the top 5. Three heat race wins on the evening went to Moler, Zach Prather, and Jim Roney.

In Alternative Pest Management USRA Modified action, it was defending track champion Brendon Gemmill finding his way back to victory lane. Gemmill bested Perry, KS newcomer Nic Bidinger on the opening lap, while current division points leader Cole Traugott’s bold move on the opening set of corners nearly saw him spin his No. 9 machine and lose wholesale spots in the process. Traugott regained the handle and set to work marching back toward the front of the field, taking over third in the running order by the race’s mid-way point.

Late in the going Traugott got by Bidinger for the runner up spot bringing 20th starting Tad Davis along with him. Both Traugott and Davis each took their turn putting pressure on Gemmill for the race lead, but at the checker it was Gemmill who crossed the line first. Traugott, Davis, and Bidinger ran 2nd throught 4th, while Blake Moler turned in an impressive run completing the top five. Gemmill, Barry Gifford, and Traugott were the 3 heat race winners.

In what has become a familiar theme early during the 2021 season, Jeremy Chambers picked up the Chunky Poodle USRA B-Mod win, holding off a late charging Travis Johnson and longtime local favorite Randy Wilson. Donald McIntosh and Kenton Allen completed the top 5. Reece Solander won the lone B-feature on the evening, while Kyle Wiens, Tyler Kidwell, and Chambers claimed heat race wins.

Primal Beef Jerky Mini Stock action saw Aaron Esparza go back-to-back leading every lap of the A-feature on his way to the win. Jayce Reimer kept pressure on Esparza the entire way but settled for the runner up spot when the checker flag waved. Colten Kelley, Brett Barber, and newcomer Brandon Vink completed the top 5, while Reimer and Kelley bagged heat race wins.

Next weekend will see all 3 modified divisions back at 81 Speedway, while the Heyglassman.com Stock Cars join the card as well. Adult General admission tickets for $12.00, Senior 65+ & Military $10.00, Children 10 & under are free. Gates open at 5 pm, racing starts at 7pm.
