Barnwell Scores While Doss Doubles During Redwood Acres Fair
Racing at Redwood Acres Raceway returned for a special two-night affair Friday and Saturday as the on-track excitement on the 3/8-mile paved oval coincided with the annual Redwood Acres Fair. Friday night’s action featured the Mid-City Motor World Late Models, Legends, Jr. Legends and bombers while Saturday night saw Legends, Jr. Legends, bombers and boat races.
Brandon Barnwell’s 15.697 qualifying lap set the standard for the Mid-City Motor World Late Models on Friday night. Ryun Leazer and Romeo Venza were the heat race victors.
One of the top contenders for the scheduled 75-lap main event fell victim to mechanical issues prior to the start of the race as Luke Hall was unable to take the green flag. Jerry Peterson took the race lead from pole position and led the opening three circuits before a caution flew for contact between Venza and Louie Shaha.
Peterson resumed leading until lap 11 when Brandon Barnwell was able to pass Peterson on the high line off turn four. Leazer moved into second several laps later and looked to be a serious challenger to Barnwell until he got loose and spun in turns three and four bringing out a caution.
Several caution periods slowed the racing action for a time. A spin by Ken Hallis off turn four, a spin by Venza off turn two, Christian Sanchez’s stopped car in turn two and debris from Joe Bonomini’s car in turn one all brought the yellow flag out. At one point, a fire in Venza’s car forced him to stop on the front stretch bringing out a red flag. During this period, light rain passed over the track for a period.
Due to the number of caution flags and the potential for weather to return to the track, race officials shortened the race to 50-laps. Barnwell retained the lead on the race’s final restart while Leazer finally returned to second after passing Peterson. Leazer was unable to get close to Barnwell to apply serious pressure in the final laps and at the finish it was Barnwell taking his second straight main event victory of the season. Leazer placed second over Peterson, Shaha and Hallis.
Jeremy Doss broke his own track record in the Legends Saturday night with a time of 17.336. Doss and Brody Manning took the heat race wins. Trey Daniels took the lead at the drop of the green for the 30-lap feature but it didn’t take Doss long to show his strength as he was able to moved to second by lap three.
With the race going caution-free, handling played a major factor in the outcome and it became clear that Doss’ car had the edge. Doss slowly closed on Daniels and on lap 10 Doss was able to take the lead by making a pass coming off turn two. Brandon White began to make his presence felt as he moved to third and began to pressure Daniels.
As the green flag action continued, Doss maintained a comfortable gap over second place. Although slower traffic did close the gap at times, Daniels was unable to apply any serious pressure on Doss. Coming to the white flag, White was able to maneuver under and past Daniels for second. At the checkered it was Doss taking the victory. White placed third while Trey Daniels, Kylie Daniels and Jarrett Dickson rounded out the top five finishers.
Friday night was a clean sweep for T.J. Sorrels in the bomber division as he took fast time in qualifying 18.705. He followed that up with wins in the heat race and the main event. Jimmy Sorrels placed second followed by Kimberley Rojas and Kordell Jackson.
Phoenix Venza took all the honors in the Jr. Legends qualifying with a 21.458 and winning the heat race and main event.
Brandon White was fast time on Saturday for the Legends with a 17.403. Trey Daniels won heat race one while heat race two saw an incident in turns three and four that knocked division rookie Colton Kinsey out for the rest of the evening. Brody Manning was the winner of the second heat.
Saturday’s feature saw early side-by-side action for the lead between Jarrett Dickson and Landen Green until a spin by Kylie Daniels in turn four brought the yellow flag out. Dickson moved to the lead on the restart but another caution quickly flew with Scott Taylor and Dustin Meier spinning on the front straight.
Dickson resumed leading following the restart but the more experienced drivers of Trey Daniels, Doss and White were able to get by him after several laps. Daniels held the lead briefly before Doss forced him to give way for the top spot while White moved to second. Doss was slowly able to build a sizable lead over White until a caution for a spin by Meier off the fourth turn brought the caution out.
The yellow period proved to be exactly what White needed as he was able to cool his tires and regain some of his handling. The final 10-laps saw spectacular action for the lead as White was able to pass Doss off turn two while Daniels briefly held second before Doss was able to return to the position a lap later.
With six laps remaining, Doss got the momentum he needed off turn two to regain the lead from White while Daniels moved to second. Things stayed the same in the final five laps of the race as Doss was able to take the win and sweep the weekend. Trey Daniels placed second followed by White in third, Kylie Daniels in fourth and Manning in fifth.
Raymond Taylor, Jr. was fast time for the bombers on Saturday with an 18.213 in qualifying. T.J. Sorrels took the heat race win while Taylor, Jr. cruised to victory in the main event over T.J. Sorrels, Tony Ramazzotti, Jimmy Sorrels and Kimberley Rojas.
All of Saturday’s Jr. Legends honors once again went to Phoenix Venza. His time in qualifying was a 21.544 and he won the heat race and main events.
Sunday’s races concluded with the fan-favorite boat race. Tad Miller was declared the winner of the boat race while Matt Murrell placed second.
Racing returns to Redwood Acres Raceway Saturday July 26. Harper Motors will present the action for the evening. The Mid-City Motor World Late Models have been added to the race schedule along with the Upstate Bomber Series, Legends, Jr. Legends and mini stocks.
