Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 22, 2025) – Jordon Mallett finished around the top third of the near-record field during his first appearance at the Chili Bowl Nationals last week.
Mallett, who was driving for Hall of Famer Sammy Swindell, finished one spot out of a transfer into the A Main during his preliminary night at the Tulsa Expo Raceway last Thursday and he ended the weekend in an E Main on Saturday.
“We had speed all week,” he said. “The more laps I got the more comfortable I was getting. I felt we were above par for never being in a midget before. Sammy brought me a really, really good race car and all of his years of experience expedited my process.”
Mallett kicked off his preliminary night by advancing from sixth to fourth place in a heat race before he ended fifth in both a qualifier and B Main.
“The prelim night we were good,” he said. “I think we were fourth quick overall, which was super positive to know we were that fast early on. In the heat race I had a really good start and got to fourth. I got to racing with third, but couldn’t close the deal and had to settle for fourth. That got us enough points to put us not only into a qualifier, but into the inversion. That was super encouraging.
“In the qualifier I made a couple of mistakes. I thought the top was going to be the way we needed to go around. I had a really good launch on the start and slid myself into turn one to get to the curb. Hindsight is 20-20 and I wish I had just ran the bottom. We got passed by a couple of cars off turn two. Later on I made a mistake getting into turn three and got on the brakes too hard and killed the car. Thankfully it cranked back up, but it cost a couple of spots. I made a couple of inexperienced mistakes that set us up for the B Main.
“We were a lot better. I was really wanting to be in the prelim A Main on Thursday, but we were one spot short. I fell back to eighth or so and clawed my way back forward. The biggest problem was I couldn’t get myself comfortable on the curb. I hadn’t figured out how to run it yet. I went back to the bottom and was better around the infield berm. It was just a little too late because guys had plugged it up. Toward the end when we got into open track our last two laps were faster than anyone in the B Main.”
With 377 competitors – only a handful shy of the event record – Mallett ranked 127th following the five preliminary nights. That relegated him toward the back of an E Main on Saturday.
“I could finally rip the top pretty consistently better than the rest of the week,” he said. “We were in a go-for-it-mode because I had nothing to lose. If the bottom plugged up I’d rip the top and I finally got more comfortable. I wound up decent at the top, but I made a mistake on the bottom and it was killing my exit. I didn’t put both packages together. We were better on the top, but not as good as two nights before on the bottom. It was another good learning race.
“We hadn’t ever put any laps in and we’ve turned a total of 57 laps now in a midget. We were pretty good. It hadn’t slowed down to me yet and every lap it came better. I want to thank Sammy for the opportunity and his team for the support all week. It was a great experience.”
