Schmelzle Heading to Cottage Grove Speedway for Marvin Smith Memorial

Inside Line Promotions – COLVILLE, Wash. (May 21, 2019) – Chris Schmelzle will make his first start of the season in Oregon this weekend when he tackles the 6th annual Marvin Smith Memorial.

Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove hosts the doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday.

“Cottage Grove is one of my favorite tracks,” he said. “It’s a fun, racy little track. It looks like there will be some great competition there. Heather (Boyce) has grown that into a pretty good event. I’m looking forward to getting back there.”

Schmelzle has competed at the quarter-mile oval off and on throughout the last 20 years.

“Somewhere around 1998 was the first time I raced my car at Cottage Grove,” he said. “I’ve gone there as much as I can.

“I ran second to Roger Crockett years ago in a race leading up to Speedweek. One year in a Speedweek race we qualified fast time. It was a huge group of cars there. We’ve always seemed to qualify well and be fast there. I don’t know if it’s the size of the track or just that the track is typically wide and racy where you can run the bottom or top, but for some reason I’ve always seemed to like that track.”

Schmelzle said his goal is to compete for a top-five result each night.

“We’re looking to be fast right off the trailer,” he said. “We’ve been consistent with our speed. I’m looking to finish that off with the results. If we can come out with a top-five finish both nights I’d be pleased with that.”
