Davis, Bryant, Kinderknecht red hot, emotional win for Ramey, Purkey pulls through at 81 Speedway

Erick Chesterman - PARK CITY, Kan. (April 16th, 2022) For the first time in 2022, weekly racing stood front and center on Saturday night at 81 Speedway. In what has already become a familiar theme early this season, Tyler Davis, Andy Bryant, and Justin Kinderknecht all found their way to O’Reilly Auto Parts Victory Lane.
The opening lap of the Alternative Pest Management USRA Modified A-feature was the most exciting one for Tyler Davis. Fellow front row starter Cody Schniepp got a good launch at the drop of the green crossing over just in front of Davis’ No. 65 machine. As both drag raced to the top of the speedway into turn one Davis turned hard left and drove to the bottom of the speedway, pulling the trigger on a slider off turn two to regain the lead.
From there Tyler Davis led all 20 laps at the line to record win number two at 81 Speedway (his fifth overall) so far in 2022. For the second time in as many nights, Tad Davis followed Tyler to the line duplicating his runner up performance the night before at Humboldt Speedway.
Brothers Cody and Bryce Schniepp finished 3rd and 4th with Josh Lanterman completing the top five. Andy Bryant picked up a B-feature win and was the night’s hard charger going 13th to 6th on the field, while the Schniepp’s, Tad Davis, and former sprint car driver Jake Greider picked up the four heat race wins.
Andy Bryant once again pulled double duty and went back-to-back in BSB Manufacturing USRA B-Mod competition here at 81 Speedway. Bryant looked nearly unbeatable behind the wheel of car No. 28 opening up a big lead and never looking back the entire way.
Brian McGowen, Friday night’s winner at Humboldt Speedway, finished second. Reece Solander and Travis Johnson crossed 3rd and 4th, while hard charger and 14th starting Jon Sheets completed the top 5. Randy Zimmerman picked up a B-feature win, with Bryant, Tyler Kidwell, Gabriel Hodges, and Solander recording heat race wins.
In MidWest Wrap Co. IMCA Mod Lite action, Justin Kinderknecht once again found victory lane behind the wheel of car No. 1JR. Using all available lanes on the racetrack throughout the night, Kinderknecht went 8th to 1st in the heat race and 5th to 1st in A-Feature action. While Kinderknecht swept the top spot on the night, it wasn’t a flawless victory. Clayton Hogie went 8th to 3rd in the nights A-feature, besting Kinderknecht for the evening’s hard charger award.
Racing under tough circumstances, George Ramey broke through a long victory drought to score an emotional win in HeyGlassman.com Stock Car competition. Normally behind the wheel of car No. 55R, Saturday night saw Ramey compete with No. 60 on the door in tribute to Earnest Ramey, who family members told Speedway officials is scheduled to enter Hospice care this week.
Ramey battled point leader Clint Smith, Scott Lehman, and Beau Davis the entire race distance. On a late race restart Ramey drove around Smith to take the lead with three laps to go, and again had to hold off Smith and Davis on a final restart with just one lap to go.
In O’Reilly Auto Parts Victory Lane, an elated Ramey let his feelings show, beating on the roof of his No. 60 machine before celebrating the emotional win with family and friends. Clint Smith, Beau Davis, AJ Finch and Austin Ramey completed the top five, Aaron Esparza was the hard charger going 17th to 7th, while Finch and George Ramey picked up heat race wins.
In a moment of good-natured fun, and as a challenge to the rest of the AutoTech Service Super Stock division, driver Chris Purkey “called his shot” predicting himself the 2022 season champion prior to the first race of the year. Three races in, Purkey broke through for his first victory of the season, claiming the division point lead in the process.
Chris’ brother Jay Purkey finished second with Jeff Richey, Kyle Blocher, and James Weve completing the top 5. After a roll over in turns one and two, Tim Ozbun and crew got the car repaired and grabbed hard charger honors in the A-feature, while Jeff Richey and Jay Purkey both nabbed heat race wins.
