Havens Takes Last Lap Thriller

Stuart, IA (April 24) – Mild weather and fantastic racing highlighted night two of the 2019 season at Stuart Speedway. Bobby Daniels, Denny Berghahn Jr, Josh Gilman, Corey Madden, Buck Schafroth, Kody Havens and the duo of Bobby Key & Denny Berghahn Jr were the feature winners on Sauerman Trucking/Affordable Quality Roofing & Exteriors Night at the Races.
After the heats were over it was the Pole Position Challenge on the track first with heat winners from Hobby Stocks, Stock Cars, SportMods and Modifieds spaced out around the track with the Hobbies almost a lap ahead of the rest. After the dust settled it was Chuck Madden Jr taking the win and the $270 voucher for Pole Position Raceway.
Outlaw Mini Mods were the first feature race on the track with Bobby Daniels and Gage Hilgenberg on the front row. Daniels held the lead early with Nathan Kilwine taking over on lap three. Kilwine led until retiring to the infield on the last lap, handing the lead back to Daniels as he went on to the win. Hilgenberg finished second with Luke Daniels third and Kilwine fourth. Bobby made it a clean sweep by winning the heat race as well.
IMCA Sport Compacts came out next with Tyler Fiebelkorn and Kolby Sabin leading the field to green. Fiebelkorn led lap one with Ryan Bryant coming from his fifth starting spot to the lead on lap two. Bryant looked to take his first win at SIS, but week one winner Denny Berghahn Jr began making his march to the front. Berghahn Jr took over on lap ten and went on to take the feature win. John Gill finished second with Sabin third, Nathan Castellano fourth and Bruce Hower fifth. Fiebelkorn and Bryant were the heat race winners.
Next up was the IMCA Modifieds with Bob Daniels and David Brown on the front row. Brown would lead early over Scott Bash until Josh Gilman came to second on lap five. Four more laps saw Gilman run Brown down and take the lead just before the caution came out. Once the cars got back going it was all Gilman as he went on to take the win. Brown finished second with Shane DeMey third, Bash fourth and Tony Hilgenberg fifth. Gilman and Bash were the heat race winners.
IMCA Hobby Stocks were up next as Chuck Madden Jr and Matt Tiernan showed the way. Madden led Tiernan and Nick Foster on lap one with Corey Madden getting to third on lap two. Corey Madden and Shannon Anderson moved to second and third on lap four just before the caution flew. Two laps and two more cautions later both Maddens and Anderson came together in turn three, Chuck getting turned around and Anderson getting a flat tire. After the fireworks settled it was Corey Madden taking the lead and driving off into the sunset to take the feature win. Brandon Cox fought through to second with Foster third, Dylan Nelson fourth and John Watson fifth. Chuck Madden and Nelson were the heat race winners.
Buck Schafroth and Chris Pruitt made up the front row for the IMCA Stock Cars with Pruitt using the outside lane to take the lead on lap one. Schafroth and Anthony Goldsberry held second and third and it was looking like this was how the race would end up, but with five laps left Pruitt bobbled in turn two. That opened the door and allowed Schafroth to take over the lead. Schafroth went on to take the win over Pruitt with Brandon Pruitt third, Goldsberry fourth and Ricky Thornton Jr fifth. Schafroth and Chris Pruitt were the heat race winners.
IMCA Northern SportMods came out in the next to last race with Brett Vanderheiden and Kyle Tanner on the front row. Vanderheiden led Tanner and Tyler Inman on lap one with Inman passing Tanner on lap two. Inman kept up his charge to the front by passing Vanderheiden a lap later for the lead and looked to ride off to the win. Colton Nelson got to third on lap eight and second two laps later before a rash of cautions broke out. Through the yellows Brayton Carter and Kody Havens worked their way to the top four, and with two laps to go it was Inman-Carter-Havens. Havens made a move past Carter, and with the white flag out he set up a move going into turn three under Inman for the win. The two cars made contact, but Havens was able to gather it up and made it back to the line first to take the victory. Carter snuck through for second, Inman finished third, Chase Rudolf fourth and Nelson fifth. Vanderheiden and Tanner were the heat race winners.
Last up for the night was the return of the 2 Man Cruiser Cars. Kyle Gibbons and Collin Gross led Bobby Key and Denny Berghahn Jr over the first four laps with Chad Rigby and Carson Carpenter third. Gibbons/Gross went for a wild spin on lap five, handing the lead to Key/Berghahn Jr. Gibbons/Gross and Rigby/Carpenter put on a spirited battle for second, but it was all Key/Berghahn Jr. as they went on to take the win. Rigby/Carpenter finished second and Gibbons/Gross, the heat race winners, took the third spot.
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our second event of the year. Next Thursday will be Elite Electric/Sitlers LED Supplies Night at the Races where the MLRA Late Models hit the high banks for the first time ever! SportMods, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks will join them for a show you won’t want to miss. See you then!
