Midwest Legends Dirt Series

Morrison the Man in Maquoketa

Maquoketa, IA (April 20th, 2025) - After a long winter, the Midwest Legends Dirt Series returned to racing at Maquoketa Speedway. After a 20-lap feature, it was Robby Morrison who remained at the top to pick up his first feature win in MLDS history.

A series high thirty-six cars made their way to the Jackson County Fairgrounds to do battle. Three states, Wisconsin, Illinois, and of course, Iowa, were represented by 17, 7, 12 drivers respectively. Drivers from all sorts of disciplines including both asphalt and dirt racing were in attendance, as well as drivers of all levels, from national champions to rookies.

After hot laps, drivers took to the track for four N&S Towing heat races. Heat one went to Dave Eberle with Lilly Fassbender and Kacey Korsmo finishing second and third. A chaotic heat two went to Dallas Ross while Hayden Schmuhl and Keith Meyer rounded out the podium. The third heat of the night was all Rob Maule’s after having to battle with Adam Zellmer and Cal Swenson, who finished second and third. The final heat of the night finished with Robby Morrison up top, with the top three being swept by Iowa natives, with Cole O’Brien and Tim Fredericks second and third at the finish.

The Fastline Design and Graphics B-Main would send twelve of the sixteen cars home, while four punched their tickets to the A-Main. Jeff Schmidt, who’s usually not one to find in a B-Main picked up the win with a flying Dylan Manning, up 10 spots in second, Keith Moline, and Brycen Wilson all punched their tickets to the feature later in the night.

A quick turn around for the driver as the A-Main pulled onto the speedway last for the night. Newcomer to the Legend class but a very experienced driver in his own right Rob Maule would lead the field to the green, with Robby Morrison, who had a great night up to that point, second. The high line has the advantage on the start with Morrison jumping to the lead immediately. The battle for the lead continued for a few laps before the first yellow flew. Trouble struck for Tim Fredericks and Hayden Schmuhl shortly after the restart. The driver of the #59S found a tractor tire and broke his left front tire and ended his night early. Morrison brought the field back to racing speed and built up a two-second gap to the rest of the field. Dallas Ross had made his way up to second place and was battling with Maule, who was trying to get his spot back. Maule managed to get past the #87 and set his sights forward for the lead, closing the gap before getting some help through a caution. Morrison got the race back going and was under pressure from Maule, with Cal Swenson trying to keep up. Swenson was racing for second before getting a tap, going around, and getting collected by multiple cars, the big one for the night. A lengthy clean up ensued and racing was able to resume. Morrison was under pressure from Maule with just three laps to go. Maule would have the speed and get to the back of Morrison, give him a little love tap, and loop himself around. Maule would get going under his power and have to tag the rear of the field. Charlie Spoonmore would get caught up in the mess as well. Morrison once again led the field to green, this time for a green-white-checkered, with Ross and Kacey Korsmo behind. Korsmo would get the jump and move into second, pressuring Morrison for the lead but not being able to get past. Robby Morrision would stay strong and pick up the win on the opening night for the Midwest Legends Dirt Series in 2025. Korsmo would bring home second and Ross third. Dave Eberle and Adam Zellmer rounded out the top five.

Morrison earned rewards from Rush Race Gear and Aero Race Wheels for the win. Orion, Illinois native Dylan Manning picked up the Professional Plating hard charger award after going 22nd to 8th and gaining 14 positions. Charlie Spoonmore was awarded a gift from HMS Motorsport after his finishing position was drawn.

The Midwest Legends Dirt Series will return to Maquoketa Speedway on June 28th for fair night. The next night out for the MLDS will be Saturday, April 26th, at the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wisconsin.
