Champions Rise, New Stars Shine on Action-Packed Armed Forces Night at Can-Am Speedway
USO Fort Drum, The Watertown Vet Center and the 10th Mountain division Band were all on hand for a great night of racing on Armed Forces Night at the Can Am Speedway this past Friday night. Plenty of racing action was in store with a pair of defending track champions getting into victory lane on for the first time this year.
Genavieve Bartlett was looking to make it three in a row in the 12 lap Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman, but she would have to come from the 8th starting spot to do it. Mike Durham was the early race leader with Eymarah Bowman and Caleb Howard giving chase. Howard would make his way to the front and appeared to be on his way to his first ever win. On lap 9 the trip to victory lane would have to wait, as a broken drive shaft sidelined him for the night. Durham took the lead over again but he had Genavieve Bartlett to contend with, as Eymarah Bowman continued her strong run in third. When the green flew Bartlett pulled off the pass in turns 1 and 2 once again and would not be denied as she scored her third win in a row. Durham crossed the line 2nd ahead of Eymarah Bowman, Mason Rogers and Brayden Bullock.
George Sanford and Jon Liberty would be the stars of the show in the 20 lap Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Cars as they battled for the lead in the early laps. The top two were thrilling the crowd with a great back and forth battle, before Liberty took the top spot on lap 9, with Andrew Hennessy, Josh Verne Jr and Nick Webb closing quickly. Defending track champion Josh Verne Jr. was on the move as he took third from Hennessy and closed in on the race leaders with 5 to go. A late caution was just what Verne needed to have a shot at the win. On a lap 15 restart, Verne would move by Sanford and then battle Liberty for the lead, taking the top spot finally on lap 17. Liberty would put up a great fight for the lead but Josh Verne Jr. was able to hold on to score his 16th career Crate Sprint Car win and first of 2025 at Can Am. Jon Liberty crossed in second with George Sanford, Tucker Donath and Andrew Hennessy completing the top 5.
Remington Hamm looked like he was finally going to crack victory lane as he dominated the early portion of the 25 lap Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modified feature. Hamm had everything going his way with Tyler Meeks, Ryan Bartlett, Scott Webb and Franklin Mackin chasing him. The field started to spread out Hamm was getting faster and worked lapped traffic perfectly, while some of the veterans began to charge to the front. Tim Fuller, Billy Dunn and Lance Willix all started to charge forward getting into the top 10 by halfway. Fuller would get to 5th on lap 17 before the yellow flew, bunching up the field for a key restart, that would change the running order quickly. When the green flew defending track champion Tim Fuller went to work, going from 4th to the lead off turn two with Hamm back to second, while Lance Willix, Billy Dunn and Jordan McCreadie were on the charge. Fuller began to drive away as Remington Hamm did his best to hold off Dunn and Willix for the runner up spot. On this night the defending track champion finally put it all together for his first win of 2025 and 48th of his Can Am Modified career. Remington Hamm finished a career best second while Billy Dunn came from 18th to 3rd, Lance Willix came from 11th to finish 4th with Jordan McCreadie completing the top 5.
It was a great side by side battle between Eric Nier and Frank Sibley early on in the 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman feature. The start of the race saw a scary moment on the back stretch. On lap 2 Jonathan Murphy slowed and was heading to the pits, Brennan Moore was not able to avoid him collided with Murphy, which also collected Paul DeRuyter in the process. Moore was able to climb out of the car on his own but was taken for observation, Murphy and DeRuyter were done for the night. When the green flew Sibley and Nier continued their battle for the top spot with Nier gaining control and pulling away. Behind them Josh Reome was also on the move charging to third by lap 10 but still had work to do to catch the leaders, while Nier was on cruise control looking to close out another win. The yellow flew on lap 13 which played right in to the hands of Josh Reome. On the restart Reome would make his way to second as he chased down Eric Nier for the lead. On lap 14 Reome would make his way to the lead and start to drive away. Getting a new car in the off season proved to be the best thing for Josh Reome as he drove away from a quality field to score his first win of the year and 8th of his Can Am Sportsman career. Eric Nier finished up second with Gavin Eisele third. Jessica Power charged from 23rd to finish 4th while Mike Fowler came from 13th to finish 5th.
The start of the 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature started off with a hard hit as OJ White spun off turn 4 at the end of lap 1, which collected Mike Greenfield, shearing off his right front tire. Both drivers were not injured but the cars were done for the night. When the green flew again an amazing 5 car battle took place between Tony Frezzo, Francis White, Justin Pope, Anthony St. Mary Jr and Corey Valade. These 5 drivers put on a great show, trading positions several times, leaving race fans wondering, who would come out with the winner. Tony Frezzo looked to be the driver to beat as Corey Valade and Justin Pope were closing. On lap 13 Frezzo’s chance at a win went away with a flat right rear tire, bringing out the yellow. On the final restart, Valade and Pope battled for the lead with Anthony St. Mary Jr. in third. Heading into turn three on the final lap Pope and Valade made contact with Valade hitting the wall. Off turn 4 Anthony St. Mary Jr. would get by both drivers for his first win of the year and 5th of his Thundercar career at Can Am. Francis White finished up 2nd with David Rasmussen, Jared Gilson and Colin Bauter the top 5.
Next week Can Am Speedway will sit idle for Memorial Day weekend but will be back for the Summer Starter for the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds plus a full show in all divisions on May 30th.
