89 Cars at Island Resort & Casino Fan Appreciation Night
ESCANABA — The Escanaba Motor Speedway hosted its third week of racing action in the 2025 racing season Saturday with a sun filled evening the backdrop for Island Resort and Casino Fan Appreciation Night.
After a caution-filled race — and a lengthy red flag to clean up a restart jam up — Suring, Wisconsin’s Doug Belongia Jr. took home the win in the Bink’s Coca-Cola Sport Modified feature race.
Beloniga held off defending track champion Matt Valiquette (Rapid River), who is attempting to three-peat as track champion this season, in a late race shootout to the finish. Matt Maki (Rapid River) followed the pair home in third after leading earlier in the race.
The tough break of the night likely belonged to Kyle Johnson (Escanaba) who shot to the early lead and held a commanding lead. But, as smoke began to pour from his car and an unrelated incident brought out the yellow flag, Johnson took his car back to the pits, relegating him to a last place finish.
Gladstone’s Paul Wagner won the Unified Street Stock Feature as he chases his fourth track championship in the division. Qwentin Johnson (Bark River) made up seven spots from his ninth place starting position to finish second while defending champion Tony Begovac (Escanaba) finished in third.
Another multi-time track champion took home the 600 Winged Micro Sprint feature as Logan Getzloff (Wilson) made his move for the win as the white flag flew. Getzloff muscled his way by Bentley Richer (Escanaba) as the pair took the white flag. Richer finished in second with Griffin Iverson (Escanaba) third.
Earlier in the night, Iverson won the Sportsman Micro Sprint feature after a spirited battle with Gage Heim (Bark River) and Macy Degnan (Escanaba).
The Riverside Auto Group Youth Micro Sprint feature belonged to Escanaba’s Tanner Rae. Defending champion Wyatt Ammel (Gladstone) finished in second while last week’s winner Amelia Hart came home third.
Jesse Denome (Escanaba) did the Danny Sullivan classic spin and win in the Super Modified feature after contact with Drake Degnan sent Denome around in turn three. Denome retained his spot while Drake fell to the rear of an attrition stricken field — drivers Rick Ness (Escanaba), Scott Degnan (Escanaba), and Gunnar Hansen (Ogantz, WI) all fell out of contention, leaving just four cars running at the end.
Paul Hosking (Bark RIver) finished second with Drake Degnan and Coletan Pepin (Escanaba) rounding out the finishers.
In the Exhibition Vintage Modifieds, Terry Royer finished ahead of Ron Anderson and Rapid River’s Charlie Peterson.
The Island Resort and Casino Sport Compact rounded out the night’s action as Ishpeming’s Mark Isely completed a sweep on the division’s races for the night, winning both the heat and the feature. Jared Demeuse (Gladstone) and Andrew Vandrese (Cornell) rounded out the top three.
The Escanaba Motor Speedway is back in action Sunday, June 15 with racing starting at 5 p.m. EST.
