Droughts No More: Bartlett and Eisele Lead Charge to Victory at Can-Am
The Mental Health Association of Jefferson County and another great crowd witnessed another warm evening of racing action at the Can Am Speedway Friday night. The heat was not only turned up in the air, but the racing on the track was even more intense, which resulted in some new faces cracking victory lane, with the mechanics getting their shot to close out the program.
Patrick Kudrinko was very close to not making the night of racing but managed to get to the track just in time and he made it pay off with a great start to the Donath Motor Worx 12 lap Limited Sportsman feature. Kudrinko led early with Caleb Howard and Mason Rogers chasing him. At the halfway point Kudrinko continued to lead but Caleb Howard was right there to challenge as Rogers, Brianna Murtaugh and 3 time winner Genavieve Bartlett remained within striking distance. As the laps wound down Howard did all he could to get by for the lead, but it was not meant to be. In the end, Patrick Kudrinko would hold on, lead every lap and record his first ever Can Am win and second win of his career. Caleb Howard, Mason Rogers, Brianna Murtaugh and Genavieve Bartlett completed the top 5.
Nick Webb has had a strong start to his rookie campaign in the Panther Frame Worx Crate Sprint Cars and this night started great, as he took the early lead but it was short lived as the red flag flew for Bruno Richard, who flipped his ride in turn 4. The opening day winner would climb out ok but the car was done for the night. On the next restart drivers fanned out 5 wide going into turn one, which resulted in slight contact, which sent Tucker Donath off turn one. He would be towed to the pits for repairs and return to the race. Once the red and yellow flags were put away, Nick Webb charged away from the field with Tiger Chapman close by and looking to get back to victory lane. Just past the halfway point Webb built up a strong lead and appeared will on his way to his first ever win, but the yellow flew for former Sportsman track champion Josh VanBrocklin, who broke while running 5th. On the restart Nick Webb would charge out front over Chapman and Hennessy and proved to be too strong as he would go unchallenged to record his first ever Crate Sprint Car victory. Tiger Chapman crossed in second over Andrew Hennessy, Chris Nethers and Tucker Donath, who charged from last to finish 5th.
Earlier in the night George Sanford was officially was credited with his first career win after the May 30th feature, following a small technical infraction on race winner Jon Liberty. In a gracious show of sportsmanship, Liberty presented the winning trophy to Sanford along with a solid handshake for a great race last week. Sanford would return to victory lane for the first time since July 1st of 2000, when he last won a Pure Stock feature at Can Am.
Ryan Bartlett had been struggling all season and finally made the choice to strap behind the wheel of a brand new car and slide a new power plant under the hood. The switch paid off as he led the 25 lap Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modified feature early on over Shaun Shaw and Scott Webb. The top three pulled away from the field in the early laps with Bartlett in firm control. Cameron Black slowed on lap 2, bringing out the yellow as smoke trailed his ride. On the restart Bartlett continued his great run, pulling away from the field while Shaw, Lance Willix, Scott Webb and Tim Fuller made their way forward to try and challenge, but Bartlett was too strong as the race reached the halfway point. With the laps clicking off drivers were in much need of a yellow flag, and the wish came true, but it came at the expense of second place running Shaun Shaw, who slowed on the track ending his great evening. This brought Lance Willix and Tim Fuller to Bartlett’s back bumper when the green flew, but Bartlett remained in control, with Willix and Fuller trying to keep pace. The new car and the new 525 motor combination was the perfect match as Ryan Bartlett would end a near three year winless drought to claim his first win of the year. Lance Willix and Tim Fuller crossed in second and third with Scott Webb 4th, and Birthday Boy, Billy Dunn overcame brake caliper issues in the heat race to come from last to finish 5th.
Over the last few years Gavin Eisele has been a force across the Northeast in the DIRTcar Sportsman Series, winning races at multiple tracks, but was somehow shut out of the winners circle on home turf. Eisele had a great run in the early going of the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman feature, as Greg Brinklow led the early laps with Paul DeRuyter right there to challenge. Josh Reome came into the night tied for third in points but his night ended on lap 2 after slight contact with another driver resulting in a broken front end and a quick finish to the night. A few laps later DeRuyter rolled the top side of the track off turn 4 to take over the lead with Eisele closing quickly, eventually taking the second spot as he tried to run down the leader. On lap 8 Eisele made the move for the top spot, while co-point leader Richard Murtaugh charged to second and set his sights on the race leader. Eisele had a dominant car and was looking to end the drought the dated back to July 28th of 2023. As the laps clicked off Richard Murtaugh and third place running Jessica Power would not get close as Gavin Eisele parked his ride in victory lane for the 8th time in his Can Am Sportsman career. Richard Murtaugh, Jessica Power, Taylor Doxtator and defending track champion Mike Fowler completed the top 5.
Tony Frezzo has had some rough luck to start 2025 in the Sundance Leisure Thundercars but would grab the lead early in the 15 lap event with last weeks winner Mike Greenfield giving chase. A scary moment on lap 2 for Greenfield as a big ball of fire came out of his ride in turn 3 and 4, resulting in a red flag on the track. The fire went out and Greenfield climbed out quickly as track safety crews extinguished the flames within a matter of seconds, Greenfield was not hurt in the incident. Tony Frezzo continued his great driver and it appeared he was headed for victory with David Rasmussen and Francis White closing quickly. That all changed on lap 9 as Rasmussen blew a tire and spun on the front stretch, nearly hitting the wall. When the green flew Corey Valade and Anthony St. Mary Jr. would challenge the race leader but Frezzo remained up front and in control. Despite an intense battle for the runner up spot in the final laps, Tony Frezzo would hold on and score his 13th career Can Am Thundercar win with Corey Valade and Anthony St. Mary Jr. crossing in the top three while Francis White rallied back to finish 4th and Collin Bauter completed the top 5.
The night finished off with a special Mechanics Race with Brian McConnell taking the win in the Sportsman portion of the event, while Blue Lashue recorded the Mechanics Race win for the Thundercars.
Next week it’s the annual Father’s Day Special as Community Action Planning Council of Jefferson County- Child Care Resource Center will be on hand as the featured non-profit with a full program in all five classes lined up and ready for battle. The Father's Day Special is presented by Howland Pump & Supply.
