Wilbur, Palmer, White, Stough all win on Smokey Frye Tribute Night
YORK HAVEN, Pa.: There was a point when it looked like Steve Wilbur was going to be a lock to win the Wingless Super Sportsman main event at BAPS Motor Speedway.
Wilbur lined up third on the grid and grabbed the lead on the eighth circuit. He was cruising along until he had to fight off a couple of drivers to secure a spot on the frontstretch at the end.
Trent Yoder and Tony Jackson gave Wilbur everything he could handle. The Mechanicsburg driver was up to task, and he retook the lead heading to the white flag and held on for the win in the 25-Lap main event on Warhorse of Camp Hill Night at the track.
“It’s good to be here,” Wilbur said. “I thought the track was a little tricky tonight in spots, and being a veteran definitely paid off as we were able to take advantage of some situations.”
Jay Fannasy started fourth on the grid and charged into the lead by the end of the first circuit. He stayed out front for seven laps before Wilbur was able to muscle his way by on Lap 8.
While Wilbur raced ahead of the field, Yoder was making his way to the front. He cracked the top five by Lap 7 and was second one lap later. He chased Wilbur down on the 19th circuit and took the lead before the two drivers hit the flagstand.
But Yoder wasn’t out of the woods. Jackson, who started 12th, nosed into the lead on Lap 21. Unfortunately, Jackson’s shot at winning ended in Turn 3 one lap later when contact was made and he spun.
Wilbur got a couple of cracks at the win. After the cone was hit on the restart, Wilbur pounced and sailed by Yoder to take the lead on Lap 24. He led the final circuit and put another win on his resumé.
Yoder settled for second, with Cliff Brian Jr. completing the podium. Curt Stroup, who started 17th, was fourth, followed by Dexter Ehrenzeller.
In Limited Late Model competition, Scott Palmer started on the pole and wired the field to earn his first win of the season at the speedway.
Palmer outlasted the competition on five restarts to take the win in the 20-Lap affair. Tommy Slanker, Trent Merkel, Devin Frey, and Jed Latshaw completed the top five.
Adam White made his first appearance at BAPS Motor Speedway count by collecting the victory in the 20-Lap 602 Crate Modified main event.
Troy Conrad started second and beat Tyler Vidal to the stripe to lead Lap 1. White, who started fourth, moved up to second in a hurry and grabbed the lead from Conrad on the fourth circuit.
White led the rest of the way, beating Michael White by .552 seconds. Brennan Chapman, Conrad, and John Leiby Sr. completed the top five.
The Superior Homes Extreme Stock class was also on the docket, with Bob Stough leading all 17 laps to take the win. He was followed by Doug Hoffman, Kody Sites, Tyler Miller, and Michael Goodwin.
