Ross Returns to Victory Lane in Sun Prairie
Sun Prairie, WI (June 30th, 2025) - It was a night to remember for Dallas Ross at Angell Park Speedway as he proved to be one of the best and pick up his first win in the 2025 Midwest Legends Dirt Series season. A late race charge saw him stand victorious in the historic victory lane.
It was a twenty-seven-car field for the second race of the weekend and second trip to Angell Park this season. A looming threat of severe weather turned some drivers away, but the MLDS regulars were in full force ready to brave whatever mother nature threw at them.
Fall River Foundry Qualifying was up first. After being relegated to the B-Main the night prior, Cal Swenson came back stronger than ever and picked up his first quick time award of the season. Adam Zellmer was second with Hayden Schmuhl third, while Payton Jones and Talyn Neuman rounded out the top five.
Three N&S Towing Heat Races were up on track. Ross was victorious in the first heat, having to work for the win. Swenson was a spot away from the win in second with Jones sneaking through for the third-place spot.
Glenn Mitchell found the checkered flag first at the end of the second heat race. He had to defend from Zellmer and Neuman, who finished second and third, after battling for a handful of laps at the end of the heat.
The third heat got off to a rocky start, with the skies opening up and causing a delay. After a short break, Schmuhl was able to pick up where he left off after picking up the A-Main win a week prior. Ryan Sullivan came home second with Charlie Spoonmore third in the end.
The final preliminary action was the Fastline Design and Graphics B-Main. Nate Wolbers, coincidently the final driver to check in and cause a B-Main, picked up the win. Chaos on the final lap saw two cars in transfer positions come together ending their nights half-a-lap early. Dan Mech, Tim Franz, Cade Reisdorf, Mark McCallum, and Mackenzie Maule all transferred to the A-Main a little later.
The A-Main lined up with Spoonmore and Mitchell on the front row after a twelve-car redraw. Spoonmore got the jump but Swenson, who started a row behind him, broke by on the back straight. Swenson led the first lap and the battle behind him heated up. Spoonmore, Zellmer, Mitchell, and Schmuhl all found themselves back there dueling for the spot. It was championship rivals Zellmer and Schmuhl who came out on top, moving into the second and third spot before the yellow came out. The field bunched back together and got back racing, with Zellmer getting the jump and taking over the race lead. The caution came back out immediately by an incident. This time, Zellmer led the field to green and Schmuhl got the jump, moving into second and stalking the bumper of Zellmer. Schmuhl took the lead but not before Zellmer fought him back. The two drivers went at it for the lead before calamity struck for them, as they both spun in turn four, bringing out the yellow and demoting them to the back of the lineup. Swenson once again found himself at the front of the restart, now with Jones and Ross behind him. Neuman moved past Ross for third and began to chase down Jones for second before the final yellow of the night came out. Swenson got the field going again and Neuman reeled him in, looking for the lead with laps winding down. With three-to-go, Swenson and Neuman got together while a look for the lead was happening. Both cars would be too damaged to continue but were able to pull off the track. Jones was forced to slow down to avoid the chaos which allowed Ross, who had been in fourth, to take over the lead. Jeff Schmidt was close behind, and attempted to make a move for the race lead, but was unsuccessful in the end.
Dallas Ross kept it straight and saw the double checkereds, his first win at Angell Park Speedway since 2016. Schmidt came home second, with Zellmer back up to third after a charge back through the field. Ryan Mech brought home a solid fourth with Spoonmore wrapping up his night in fifth.
Ross won prizes from Rush Race Gear and Aero Race Wheels for the win. Schmidt would take home the Professional Plating and Rush Racegear hard charger award, up twelve-spots in the end. The HMS Motorsport random draw by Daxton was nineteenth, which was Swenson in the end.
The Midwest Legends Dirt Series returns to Angell Park Speedway once more in the 2025 season. July 13th is the date, alongside the AFS Badger Midgets and MSA Sprint cars. That race is smack dab in the middle of a busy July for the MLDS.
