ASCS Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek Continues Tuesday at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway
MESQUITE, Texas (June 12, 2016) With the first round of the 24th ASCS Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek and Bob Westphal Memorial Cup in the books, teams are headed south to the famed half-mile, Devil’s Bowl Speedway for a Tuesday night showdown.
The longest running destination with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network, Tuesday’s trip to the Devil’s Bowl will be the 84th time the National Tour has graced the clay of the Lanny and Beverley Edwards owned oval and 18th during Speedweek.
Coming into the Devil’s Bowl fifth in National Tour standings, Wayne Johnson topped Speedweek competition one year ago. Adding two more wins at the Texas oval since June, 2015, the only other driver to park in Victory Lane in the series past four stops at the Devil’s Bowl is Sam Hafertepe, Jr.
Currently tied with Johnny Herrera for the National Tour point lead following his win in the series return to the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo on Saturday, June 11, Hafertepe has amassed a half-dozen podium finishes this season, including a pair of National Tour wins. For Herrera, the Devil’s Bowl is a track of ups and downs. Speedweek winner in 2013, Herrera last visit in the 2016 Spring Nationals was a strong performance from 11th to fifth.
Six podium finishes at the Devil’s Bowl, including a win, Matt Covington currently holds third, 83 points removed from the lead with Logan Forler trailing the third spot by only seven points.
Adding his third top-five on the season at the Route 66 Motor Speedway, defending series champion, Aaron Reutzel, continues to make up ground on the top-five with only 10 points separating him from Wayne Johnson. Blake Hahn holds seventh with Seth Bergman, who topped the Devil's Bowl during Speedweek in 2014, currently eighth. Brad Loyet, and Josh Baughman round out the top-ten.
Topping the Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals in 2013, Kyle Bellm is currently 11th. Running a part time National Tour lineup, Brandon Hanks holds 12th with Steven Russell 13th. Tommy Bryant and Travis Rilat complete the Top 15.
Kicking off five straight nights of racing across Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, drivers from across the mid-west are expected to take part in the remainder of Speedweek, including three time Indy 500 starter, and 2014 Chili Bowl Champion, Bryan Clauson who will take his “Circular Insanity Tour” to the Devil’s Bowl on June 14, Lawton Speedway on June 15, and Creek County Speedway on June 16.

From the state of Texas, the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network will trek north to Oklahoma’s Lawton Speedway on Wednesday, June 15. The second Edwards’ family owned facility on the Speedweek lineup, Lawton first saw action on Speedweek in 2002. Falling off the radar in 2009, the series returned to the quarter-mile oval in 2012 with Wayne Johnson picking up the win after it was found that Jason Johnson had lost his muffler during the race. In all, 14 races have been contested under the ASCS National banner at the Lawton Speedway. Of those, nine have been Speedweek stops. Rained out in 2015, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. is the most recent winner with his victory in 2014. The win was Sam’s first in the state of Oklahoma with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.

Continuing through the “Sooner State”, Thursday, June 16 lands us at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla. for some Thursday Night Thunder (#TTT). Also falling to Mother Nature in 2015, Christopher Bell picked up the win in the series last visit on June 19, 2014 after a storied battle with Jason Johnson. The tightest track on the week, Creek measures just over a quarter-mile in length and has a very diverse list of winners with 14 Speedweek stops yielding a dozen winners. Overall, Creek has seen Lucas Oil ASCS action on 20 occasions.

Another track with a long ASCS history, the “Historic Half-Mile” Missouri State Fair Speedway will see action on Friday, June 17. While the series has visited 15 times, the Missouri half-mile has never been a part of Speedweek until now. Dubbed the Showdown in Sedalia, the Friday night spectacular is presented by Champion Brands and will include Open Wheel Modifieds.

And finally, the big one. The finale of the 24th ASCS Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek at the famed Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. on Saturday, June 18. The fourth straight year the “Diamond of Dirt Tracks” has been the final stop on Speedweek, Tony Bruce, Jr. scored a very emotional victory in 2015 as not long after, the driver of the No. 18 dropped out of full time competition. Another track that has offered a very diverse lineup of winners, four Speedweek visits has yielded just as many winners with two first time winners in the ranks. In all, 18 shows have been contested at the central Missouri oval.

Since the start of Speedweek, 130 nights have been contested at 37 tracks, in 35 cities, across nine states. Gary Wright stands as the winningest driver in Speedweek history with 30 wins. That’s more than double what second place, Tim Crawley, was able to score in his time with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. In all, 44 drivers have at least one Speedweek victory.
