Swaim Wins Wallbander Cup; Cox, Johnson, And Kennerly Also Earn June 25th Cottage Grove Wins
Cottage Grove, Oregon- Saturday, June 25th, would have the biggest Street Stock race of 2022 at Cottage Grove Speedway. With all the rainouts, it turned out to be the debut event for the division. Other classes on the card included 360 Sprints, Late Models, and Mach-1 Racing Solutions IMCA Sport Compacts.
Dexter's Taunton Swaim reigned supreme in the Wallbanger Cup finale for the Street Stocks. The race is named in honor of the late Mark Howard, who was instrumental in getting the class started. Redmond racer Kyle Coen and Don Croy, from Prineville, were second and third. Todd Miller of Albany finished fourth, while Cottage Grove chauffeur Eric Freeman was fifth.
Kinzer Cox opened his winning account for the 360 Sprints. The Cottage Grove native had won a Todd's Auto Body Limited Sprint feature earlier in the year on April 2nd. In the Brett Smith-owned entry, Roseburg's Matt Hein wound up the runner-up over third finishing Brian Boswell, also of Roseburg. Melissa Solesbee, from Cottage Grove, ended her evening in fourth, while Eureka, California traveler Anissa Curtice posted a fifth-place result.
Jason Johnson revisited the CGS winner's circle in the Late Models. The Gresham-based driver got his first win at the historic ¼-mile clay oval for the first time since March 26th. Randy Barley of Albany hit the line second while Larry Rametes, from Dayton, was third. Scio racer Rob Campos and Redmond's Nathan Augustine were fourth and fifth.
Lastly, the Mach-1 Racing Solutions IMCA Sport Compacts witnessed Michael Kennerly take home the victory. It is the first win for the Sutherlin driver in 2022. Burnie Bryant of Sutherlin beat out Eugene's Jack Viarci for second. Cottage Grove racers Kerry Cooper and Chris Pierce, in the Randy Kuhl-owned machine, were the rest of the top five.
Cottage Grove Speedway has a busy tripleheader weekend coming up for Freedom Cup. The weekend will utilize a unique format and features the Todd's Auto Body Limited Sprints, Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods presented by Royalty Core Custom Grille and Truck Parts, and Mach-1 Racing Solutions IMCA Sport Compacts.
