As Mercer celebrate his 70th season of existence the 410 sprints are coming in for the first of many shows this season. The 410 sprints go back as far as the 1950s at Mercer when they were called super modifieds and resembled upside down bathtubs. That was until local sprint patriarch Floyd Trevis from nearby Youngstown Ohio created the “sprint car” in the middle 60s as we know it today with the tail tank made famous by Trevis still in use.
Some of the names and car numbers that will be appearing on Saturday go back to the 70s at Mercer as many 2nd generation drivers such as 4 time track champion Jack Sodeman Jr , whose dad Jack Sr drove the original #23, both have many feature wins at Mercer. Brent Matus, who he and his father Jerry also competed at Mercer for many seasons with several feature wins as well, and Bob McMillin who is driving his family’s own #5 which hall of famer Ted Wise drove to many wins in the 70s.
With time moving on now we have 3rd generation drivers competing with Brandon Matus continuing his families legacy with Mercer wins and Adam Kekich , who along with his dad Mike, and grandfather Paul “Putzy” Kekich have also won several features at Mercer and Adam last season won all but One feature event in the five 410 sprint appearances. Other drivers expected are Brandon Spithaler who has won at Attica this season, George Hobaugh, Jeremy Kornbau, and others.
Also on the card will be the FASTRAK crate modifieds, Racesaver 305 sprints, and the mighty Mercer mini stocks which has the highest weekly purse with the winner getting $300 dollars.
