Steve Davis Sweeps 602 Modified Season at BAPS, Wins Hot Frog Hot 50

YORK HAVEN, PA - Steve Davis felt comfortable at BAPS Motor Speedway the first time he took a fast lap on the racing surface.

It showed in his performance in FXG Sign and Label/Dickey’s Barbecue 602 Modified competition this season. When Davis pulled into the York Haven, Pa., facility, the competition was running for second place.

That was the case — again — Sunday during the 18th annual Insinger Performance/Sunoco Nationals fueled by Miller’s Racing Parts. Davis used a tactical approach and made his car last to the finish under tricky conditions to capture the Hot Frog Hot 50. It was his sixth win in six starts in 2022 at BAPS.

“Not a chance,” said Smith when asked if he imagined sweeping the season series at BAPS Motor Speedway. “It’s unbelievable, right now. To take every one of them with the quality of cars we’ve had ... I just like this place. It fits my driving style well.

“We had a good car in the [Open Sportsman Modified] first one, and I was just hoping to make it to the end in this one. I just have to thank all of my sponsors and people who work on this car. Without them, the season wouldn’t be what it is.”

It was a big day for Davis. As he mentioned, he took top honors in the Open Sportsman Modified main event, dominating the 20-Lap affair after taking the lead on the eight circuit and cruising to a 1.294-second victory.

The winning march in the 50-Lap 602 Modified feature wasn’t as easy. Craig Whitmoyer started on the pole and left the field sit in the first half of the race.

Whitmoyer knifed through traffic on the slick surface and built a huge 7.5-second advantage by the time Lap 25 was scored. Meanwhile, Davis, who started third, settled into third and was worried about saving his equipment until the end.

“She’s about bald,” Davis said in Victory Lane. “I was just trying to save it at the beginning. Craig is fast and good, and I saw him setting a torrid pace, and I’m just like, ‘I’m going to keep this as straight as possible through the corners and try to save what I have until the end.’

‘Once we got that yellow, I was able to get next to him and look at his tire, and it wasn’t looking good. I’m like, ‘Man, if his looks like that, what does mine look like?’ I was trying to roll in as easy as I can and drive off as straight as possible.”

It was a good plan. Davis got his shot at the leader after Kris Ney shredded a tire on the frontstretch on Lap 29.

Davis wasn’t going to let this opportunity slip by. The Cream Ridge, N.J., ace went one lane above Whitmoyer through Turns 1 and 2 and was able to get a launch off the second corner to take the lead on the backstretch.

“It was three laps before that caution came out, and I couldn’t see Craig anymore,” Davis said. “I was on the straightaway, and he was coming out of Turn 2, so I had to pick it up in case we didn’t have a yellow.

“I started running two or three laps pretty quick, and the next thing I know, the yellow came out. I didn’t have to use this stuff up, because if I had to keep going like that, I wouldn’t have made it.”

Continued Davis, “When we were passing cars and getting into lapped traffic, you could run in deeper and higher and stick a lane higher. I only wanted to do that if I had to force the car there, because the more pressure you put on a tire, the more it’s going to wear.”

Whitmoyer stayed close for the next 10 laps, but his chance of retaking the lead came to an end on Lap 40 when his tire expired. He was able to change the tire and rejoin the field and make a run to the top five.

Meanwhile, Davis was in conserve mode. He kept it as straight as he could and survived five more restarts to claim the satisfying victory by .735 seconds.

Rick Wegner Jr. finished second, with Ray Woodall completing the podium. Joseph Brown and Whitmoyer rounded out the top five. Whitmoyer had quick time for the 19-car field with a lap of 19.412.

In Superior Homes Extreme Stock competition, Patrick McClane dominated the 50-Lap main event by leading every lap from his outside-pole starting spot.

There were four cautions over the race distance, but there was no catching McClane. He took the win at the checker by a hefty 4.261 seconds.

Jason Townsend had a fast car at the end and stormed from 20th to second. Austin Hogue, Chase Rehbein, and Sam Rial completed the top five.

Joey Hoffer was equally impressive in Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model action, leading every lap to win the 20-Lap main event.

Hoffer started on the pole and held it through two caution periods to win by 2.510 seconds over Ben Whitaker. Randy Zechman, Zach Kauffman, and DJ Mease completed the top five.

Jorjie Sweger continued her winning pace in the Gene Latta Ford Central Pa. Legends presented by Baker Door Company. The young driver won her third straight with the series in a 20-Lap nail-biter.

Sweger, who also won Friday’s Legends main event at the speedway, started on the pole and led the whole way, but her lead was never safe. Seth Kearchner was on her bumper through four cautions and got his nose to her inside out of Turn 4 on a couple of occasions.

Each time, Sweger made the right move to hold the lead. She took the win by a mere .190 seconds at the stripe over Kearchner, Jeremy Ott, Travis McClelland, and Mike Racine.

In the 20-Lap Street Stock feature, Brian Walls took the lead from Jim Palm on Lap 6 and led the rest of the main event. AJ Hoffner left the field sit in the 30-Lap Limited Stock main and took the win by 4.277 seconds. Connor Cantwell won the Classic Car feature.

The 18th annual Insinger Performance/Sunoco Nationals fueled by Miller’s Racing Parts was a two-day event. On Friday, Ken Duke Jr. won a thriller over Doug Dodson in the 305 Sprint Car main event.

Duke led the first 16 circuits in the 20-Lap affair. Dodson wrestled the lead away for one lap before Duke got back out front for three laps and claimed the win by .660 seconds at the finish line.

Dodson finished second, with Will Brunson, Mike Melair, and Domenic Melair completing the top five. Sweger and Brian Walls won the Legends and Street Stock feature events.
