Chase Gutshall Holds Off Russ Mitten for 1st Sportsman Win of 2019

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Chase Gutshall has been fast throughout the season in Super Sportsman competition at BAPS Motor Speedway.

But, speed isn’t the only component to winning races. Position and a little bit of luck are needed to polish off a successful night.

That’s where Gutshall has been lacking. He’s had fueling issues, incidents with other competitors, and a couple of parts failures that have slowed him down and kept him winless in 2019.

Until now.

Gutshall wasn’t perfect, which for once played into his favor. Despite a slight hiccup in the motor, he held off Russ Mitten on the final lap to capture the 25-lap BAPS Super Sportsman main event.

“My team, it’s basically me and my dad chugging along at the shop,” said Gutshall after his second career win at the speedway. “I don’t let stuff get in my head on race day.

“Going into the feature, I knew we weren’t running right, but I still had to try my best. I think the motor being down helped me pretty good, because I had less wheel spin. But as a driver, you can’t let stuff get to you.”

Gutshall and Co. worked on the motor between the heat race and the main event, but it didn’t solve the issue. Still, he was able to carve his way to the front.

While Gutshall raced in the top five, Jay Fannasy enjoyed time at the front of the field. He took the lead from Matt Ondek on Lap 2 and led through the 19th circuit.

Gutshall slipped past Mitten in lapped traffic and ran down Fannasy, making the pass for the top spot on Lap 20. Getting away from the fast-closing Mitten was difficult with the motor sputtering in the closing laps.

Mitten made a bid in the final corner coming to the checker. Gutshall, who was running the top in Turns 3 and 4 most of the race, moved down to block and escaped with the narrow victory.

“I knew if I stayed up top, I would be in good shape,” Gutshall said. “The motor started acting up, and I was blocking from there. I could hear Russ, so going down the backstretch and into the last two corners, I moved down to the bottom to block and got it done.

“This was big, especially with having the guys from Drydene. Logan Schuchart and his team, Rick Eckert in the Late Models, they have been pretty successful this year, so it’s good to get a win for them.”

Continued Gutshall, “I texted [Drydene] afterward. I try to stay in touch with them, and they congratulated me, so it’s pretty special.”

Mitten settled for a second-place finish. Kenny Edkin, Fannasy, and Paul Miller completed the top five. Scott Dellinger, Ondek, and Frankie Herr were heat winners for the 22-car field.

In 358 Late Model competition, Bobby Beard surged out front at the start and wired the field in the 20-lap Creekside Auto Sales main event.

Troy Miller, Sean Merkel, Ben Whitaker, and Alan Sagi completed the top five. Heat winners for the 21-car field were Sagi, Miller, and Merkel.

Nick Sweigart made a daring last-lap pass to score the win in the PASS/IMCA 305 Sprint Car feature.

Zach Newlin led the first 19 circuits, before Sweigart made his move coming out of Turn 2 and led the drag race to the checker.

Eddie Wagner, John Walp, and Tim Tanner Jr. followed Sweigart and Newlin to the finish. Jay Krout, Logan Diehl, and Tanner were heat winners for the 29-car field.

The Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Pools Street Stocks were also on the card, with Will Walls taking the win in an event that was cut three laps short because of rain.

Walls took the lead from Jasen Geesaman on Lap 3 and never looked back. He beat Brian Walls, Chad Smith, and Geesaman. Bud Witmer completed the top five. Will Walls and Brian Walls won heat races.

In Superior Homes Extreme Stock competition, Travis Horan won an early scrum with Andrew Hogue on Lap 5 and took the win. The race closed out the program and was also cut to 12 laps because of a second shower.

Patrick McClane, Sam Rial, Tim Berkheimer, and Richard Daugherty completed the top five. Rial and Hogue were heat winners for the 12-car field.
