Stewart Grabs Third in Wild Copper on Dirt Opener
Shane Stewart brought the ROCKSTAR/MAKITA/A.R.T. No.57 home with a third place finish after a wild feature event at the opening night of the Copper on Dirt at USA Raceway in Tucson, Arizona.
To kick off the evening, Shane grabbed the lead of his heat from his front row starting spot aboard his Silva Motorsports/Lucas Oil Products/Finley Farms sprinter and never looked back as he cruised to a convincing victory.
The redraw put the Cross Creek Trucking/Palmero Properties/Pro Bilt Construction backed entry in the seventh starting spot in what would be a very eventful and entertaining 25-lap feature event.
As the green flag waved, Stewart and Mason Moore quickly began battling for the seventh position as the caution flag waved on the second lap.
After lining up behind Moore in the eighth spot, Shane quickly got passed the youngster as the ROCKSTAR/MAKITA No.57 also got passed Rick Ziehl to grab sixth when he began to battle Jeff Swindell to crack the top five.
Once he cleared Swindell, Shane used an aggressive slide job to get passed Logan Forler on the sixth lap to grab the third spot. Once in third, Shane quickly reeled in second running Tony Bruce, JR before the caution again waved on the seventh lap.
On the ensuing restart, the Lucas Oil Products/Finley Farms/Cross Creek trucking entry got under Bruce, JR for second where he then began to battle race leader, Johnny Herrera.
As Shane continued to stalk Herrera for the lead, he was able to slide Herrera for the point, but the caution slowed the duos fierce pace on the 11th lap putting Shane on Herrera’s rear bumper. Once the race got back underway the two motored away from the field as they raced side by side at times over the next six laps at a very rapid pace.
On a lap 17 restart, Shane was able to put his ROCKSTAR/MAKITA machine on the bottom of race track and slide past Herrera entering turn three, but Herrera dove back underneath Shane and made contact with the No.57 allowing Jeff Swindell to grab the second spot on lap 18.
Shane continued to pressure Swindell over the next six laps, but came up just short as he grabbed the third spot locking him into tomorrow nights feature event.
“We had a great ROCKSTAR/MAKITA/Lucas Oil Products car tonite, and a car capable of winning,” said Shane. “It got a little wild out there towards the end, but we’ll be back tomorrow and look to get in victory lane.”
