Inside Line Promotions – SALINA, Okla. (Oct. 24, 2016) – Johnny Herrera earned his first top 10 with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series in more than seven years last Saturday at Salina Highbanks Speedway during the O’Reilly Auto Parts Twister Showdown.

Herrera, who hasn’t competed in many 410ci sprint car shows during that stretch, last posted a top 10 with the World of Outlaws in July 2009.

“That was the last time I ran 410s full time,” he said. “It was good to run good again. The race track is somewhere I’ve run before. I only changed one little thing that I do. It was the same combination of shocks and the thing was good all night. Most of the time I have to change a lot more when I race 410s. I think I’ve been making too many changes when we’ve gone 410 racing.”

The night began with Herrera qualifying 23rd quickest overall. However, he charged from eighth to fifth place in a heat race to lock into the main event.

“I knew it was going to be tough starting eighth,” he said. “We got a spot right away and then Paul McMahan broke. We had a restart and we got by Sammy (Swindell). He looked like he was a little tight.”

The three positions Herrera picked up in the heat race moved him forward nine spots in the main event, which he started 14th.

“We moved up right off the get-go,” he said. “We were up to ninth or 10th in the first lap or two. I got by Brad Sweet and a couple other good guys early in the race and then I ran around the bottom too long. I fell back to about where I started and then we ran our way back up there. They had a crash at the end where Paul and (Kerry) Madsen got together and that moved us up two spots. Overall we had a good car.”

Herrera ended with a 10th-place result, which was his 35th top 10 of the season.

He is off this weekend before tackling the Fall Fling with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour on Nov. 4-5 at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla.
