Mullens continues early portion of season at Wild West Shootout

Tanner Mullens embarked on four nights of racing in five days starting on Wednesday at Vado (N.M.) Speedway Park, ultimately coming away from the second week of competition at the 18th annual Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout with a pair of top-15 results in the Modified class.

Mullens scored a best finish of ninth during the six-race series’ opening weekend, then got back behind the wheel as one of 52 Modified entrants when the event picked up again on Wednesday night. Chasing the evening’s $1,000 winner’s payout in his Fuqua Trucking No. 02 ride, Mullens finished seventh in his heat and sixth in his B-Main, preventing him from advancing to the main event at the 3/8-mile oval.

After the series’ off day on Thursday, Mullens returned to Vado on Friday to pursue another checkered flag worth $1,000. With a stout field of 59 Modifieds in the pits, Mullens won his heat race and rolled off fourth in the 25-lap A-Main. He fought mechanical issues in the race and spun while running in the fourth spot, eventually bringing home a 12th-place result.

The next night, the Modified purse increased to $2,000, drawing an impressive 57-car Modified field. Mullens finished fourth in his heat, but transferred into the 25-lap feature race with a runner-up effort in his B-Feature. He started 19th in the main event and picked up five positions to finish 14th.

Another $2,000 was on the line in Sunday’s finale as 44 Modifieds descended on Vado. Mullens’ hopes were dashed early, however, as a car spun two laps into the heat and collected much of the field. Mullens was caught up in the accident, ending his evening well shy of the 25-lap A-Main.
