PIEROVICH LEADS USAC SPRINTS BACK TO MADERA FOR POMBO CLASSIC

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (June 8, 2011) – The USAC Western Classic Racing Series will run it’s third straight pavement race of the 2011 season as the series returns to Madera Speedway this Saturday night for the “Al Pombo Classic”. Alamo’s Scott Pierovich leads the points after taking a strong victory in the “Larry Burton Classic” at Roseville’s All American Speedway on May 14.

The race will honor Central Valley legend Al Pombo who passed away last November at the age of 85. Pombo won more than 500 races in his career that included seven Super Modified championships. Vintage Super Modifieds, including one formerly driven by Pombo, will compete on Saturday night along with the USAC teams.

Pierovich and six-time USAC champion Tony Hunt have gone back-and-forth throughout the first two pavement races of 2011. Hunt won an epic duel with Pierovich during the “Fred Gerhardt Classic” in April at Madera and finished second to Pierovich at Roseville.

The edge in the overall series points goes to Pierovich after a solid eighth place finish in the dirt opener at Chico on March 11.

Saturday’s action at Madera not only pays points for the USAC Western Classic but also for the USAC Western Sprint Car Series. Luis Ramos III of Clovis leads that division after a third place finish in Salt Lake City on Memorial Day.

A gaggle of cars find themselves locked up behind Pierovich in the overall standings with Folsom’s Jerry Kobza third ahead of Sebastopol standout Geoff Ensign. Visalia’s Audra Sasselli didn’t compete at Chico but still ranks fifth with pavement specialist Ramos in sixth. Fair Oaks’ Shauna Hogg, Cody Gerhardt, Tim Barber, and Brian McClish round out the top-ten in the standings.

Expected to join the top-ten USAC Western Classic drivers at Madera is Idaho racer Johnny Giesler. Giesler races sprints with and without the wing at his home track Meridian Speedway and a few other Idaho drivers are considering the trip to Madera as well.

Former Ford Focus champion Tim Skoglund of Fresno is also expected along with pavement regulars Gordon Rodgers, Marvin Mitchell, Don Emery, and Bill Logan.

Joining the USAC Western Classic Racing Series sprint cars on the bill will be USAC Ford Focus Midgets and Young Guns.

Grandstands open at 5:00 p.m. with racing to start at 6. Tickets are just $18 for adults, $10 for youth ages 6-12, with kids 5 and under free!
