Price Picks Up 17th-Place Finish During West Texas Crude Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – LUBBOCK, Texas (May 14, 2020) – Robbie Price returned to action on Tuesday at West Texas Raceway following a two-month hiatus as a result of numerous canceled events because of COVID-19.

Originally scheduled to be a two-day event, persistent rain showers that began during time trials forced the cancellation of Wednesday’s West Texas Crude Nationals finale after Price posted a 17th-place finish during Tuesday’s opener.

“For being out of the car for so long, it wasn’t really too bad of a night,” he said. “It would’ve been nice to take what we learned Tuesday and see what we could do Wednesday, but Mother Nature obviously had other plans for us.”

Price opened Tuesday night by laying down a lap of 13.860 seconds in time trials. That was good enough for fifth quickest in his group, missing the heat race inversion by only one. He then finished where he started – fifth – in the heat race to lock into the A Main.

“We went out late in our time trial group and I really didn’t get a good grasp of what the track was going to do,” he said. “We got ourselves in the show through the heat, which is always a positive, but it was tough to really tell where to go setup-wise on the car.”

Price lined up 20th and dropped two positions on the initial start. He struggled to find momentum as the first eight laps were littered with multiple cautions. Following a return to green-flag action on Lap 9, Price felt a tire going down and pulled off the track. He was credited with a 17th-place finish.

“I thought we were pretty good out there, but starting so far back we were really burning up our tires trying to make pace,” he said. “They had that red flag on Lap 8 and the tires were so beat up already that I knew then we might be toast if we went much longer. We were pretty much locked into where we were at position-wise and it was not worth tearing up equipment to maybe gain one spot or something.”

Price is hoping to race this weekend and he has a couple of events on his radar, but with possible inclement weather on the horizon he is going to monitor the situation before committing to anything specific.

“It was nice to get on the track and make some laps and just get comfortable again,” he said. “We are ready to race and if the weather cooperates we’ve got some good options out west. But we also do not want to spend money traveling only to be parked. So we’ll play it by ear and see what makes sense as it comes.”
