Gordon on a tear heading into Renegade 100

Robert Gordon of Milton enters this Saturday’s MX Fuels/Gordon Oil 100 for Key RD Trailer Sales Renegades on a three-race win streak that has propelled him into a first-place tie atop the divisional point standings with defending champion Lance Rabtoy of Fairfax.

Gordon drives the No. H20 – as in H20 Water Drilling - his Milton-based company. His ride is also sponsored by Premier Paving of Milton.

With his win on Casella Night, August 2, which required a last-lap pass of leader Josh Terry, Gordon increased his career win total to 19 – tops on the all-time Airborne Renegade list.

Despite being Airborne’s winningest driver all-time, Gordon is still seeking his first track championship. Having drawn even with Rabtoy in the 2014 standings, Gordon finds himself only two points ahead of Mooers, NY driver Jamy Begor.

Saturday’s 100-lap event – the Renegades typically run 30-lap features – is the second long-distance event of the season for the 8-cylinder, crate motor, metric chassis cars. Gordon won the 98.9 WOKO FM 100 in June. He led at the halfway point when a competition yellow was thrown for refueling and minor adjustments (no tire changes).

Gordon did not choose to restart the second half of the race at the tail of the field so as to collect a $500 bonus. Instead he opted to stay put at the front of the field. He was overtaken at one point, but regained the lead for keeps on lap 71.

“Some guys are reluctant to run down in the low lane, so I’ve spent a lot of time down there,” Gordon said. It’s tougher on the brakes because of the banking through the corners, but if they want to give me that line, I’ll take it.”

“Rob’s on fire right now,” Lance Rabtoy acknowledged. “He’s charging hard. It’s going to take a lot to beat him. I’ve had flywheel and transmission problems of late after a strong start. If we can keep the car healthy, we’’ll try to give him a run for his money.”

Post time Saturday is 6 p.m. The MX Fuels/Gordon Oil race card includes the Ernie’s Discount Tools 358 Modifieds, J&S Steel Sportsman Modifieds and Busch Mini Modifieds. Adult admission/$12 – kids 12 and under free
