Imrie gets second Baker Cup win at GRP

With temps hitting the 90's, it was another hot night of racing at the Greenbush Race Park, as it was the 20th running of the Elliot Baker Memorial for the Modifieds.

With five past Baker Cup winners in the field, 15 Mods lined up for their 30 lap feature. Three time winner Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain, MB, sat on the pole, and would lead the first few laps, but on lap five it would be the 2014 winner, Ward Imrie of Winnipeg, MB, to pass Delaine coming out of corner four for the lead. Through four cautions, Imrie held everyone off, and cruised to his second baker Cup win. A good battle for second, third, and fourth between the 2011 winner Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN, Shawn Teunis of West St. Paul, MB, and last year’s winner Gavin Paul of Fort Francis, Ont. Teunis would end up second, while Wahl would win his heat and finish third. Other heat wins went to Ryan Kereluk of St. Andrews, MB, and Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN.

Lance Schill of Langdon, ND would lead the 11 car Midwest Modified feature to the green, and Schill would take command early. A caution five laps in put everyone on his bumper and on the restart Schill would jump to the lead again. Austin Hunter of Winnipeg, MB, started seventh, and would give Schill a run through the middle of the race, but Hunter didn't have enough to make the pass, and Schill would go on to win and sweep the evening. Hunter would finish second and Gary James Nelson of Ponemah, MN, third. Kyle Dykhoff of Perham, MN, picked up the other heat win.

Nine Streets lined up for their feature, and Casey Vargason of Edinburg, ND, would take the early lead. Four laps in and Chase Boen of Karlstad, MN, would make the pass for the lead in corner two. The only caution came just two laps later, Boen would lead on the restart, but when they passed the flag stand again it would be Kyle Dykhoff out in front. Dykhoff would go one to win his second in a row and third on the year. Boen would win the only heat and finish second and Vargason third.

A first time winner of sorts in the nine car Pure Stock feature, as "The Badger Rocket" Bryon Berger picked up the win. Berger has past wins in the Streets and Super Stocks, but this is his first win as a Pure Stock driver. A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, finished second and Jared Palm of Warroad, MN, third. Mike Fleming of Winnipeg, MB, won the heat.

Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, would lead the early stages of the seven car Lightning Sprint feature, but on lap six it would be Presley Truedson of Kennedy, MN, to pass Pederson in corner four. Truedson would go on to get the win, her first of the year. Pederson finished second and won her heat, and Alex Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, would finish third. Alan Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, would get the other heat win.

Up next at the "Park", will be the Race of Champions qualifier for the Modifieds, Streets, and Midwest Modifieds. Also racing that night will be the Pure Stocks, Lightning Sprints, Outlaw Mini Mods, and 4 Cylinders. Gates open at 4 pm, cutoff for the draw is 6 pm, and the racing starts at 7 pm sharp.
