Minnesota Missile Monday: Double Header at Plessis
June 17, 2019

The 1KC was back on the track this past weekend for the double header at Plessis Motor Speedway. Seven young drivers registered for the racing on Saturday. Under the threatening skies, the race Gods were working their power to break up the storm that brought rain to most other tracks in the area.

PLESSIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY: SHOW 1

The first heat saw KC Sparks jump out to the early lead from the outside of the front row ahead of pole setter Nixon Heiderscheidt. Sparks and Heiderscheidt put some distance between themselves and the field as they pulled away. The lead duo caught the back of the field as they took the white flag. Sparks opted for the high side around the slower kart while Heiderscheidt stuck to the bottom. As the lapped kart drifted up on the back stretch, Heiderscheidt was in position and claimed the heat one win ahead of Sparks, Tavor West, Carter Heiskell, Florence Drost, Kaecyn Krogman-Jones, and Wyatt Schuette.

Heat two lined up with an invert of the first heat start putting Schutte and Krogman-Jones on the front row. Krogman-Jones jumped out to the lead and put some distance between himself and the field. Sparks and Heiderscheidt raced from the tail of the field through traffic cleanly to battle with West for the second position. While they were battling, Krogman-Jones continued pacing the field with consistent laps. Sparks and Heiderscheidt closed in on Krogman-Jones in the final circuit with Sparks attempting to use the top side going into the final set of turns but after learning from his first heat mistake, moved down to settle for second with Krogman-Jones claiming his first heat win of the year.

The feature saw Heiderscheidt and Sparks pace the field to the green. On the opening lap, Heiderscheidt was on the low side going into the first turn while Sparks was just above him. Sparks got loose and his kart stepped out on him causing a malea exiting turn two with Krogman-Jones seeing West drive over his hood, Heiskell spun in and made contact and Drost suffered the worst damage when her front left spindle bent after contact with Heiderscheidt’s spun kart. All drivers except for Drost were able to continue on. Heiderscheidt timed his start from the pole to jump into the lead. Sparks remained in close pursuit throughout the entire event. As the laps clicked off, Heiderscheidt was able to maintain his lead over Sparks and cruised to his first winged victory of the season. West, Krogman-Jones, Heiskell, and Schuette completed the finishing field. Heiderscheidt was also the winner of the class drawing for a $100 bonus prize from the promoter.

PLESSIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY: SHOW 2

The second show started after a short intermission for drivers to redraw and get reset to run a complete second show. Sparks’s good luck with the draw continued as he drew the #1 stick putting him on the pole for the first heat race alongside Heiskell. After a few attempts to keep the field close on the start, Krogman-Jones was found to have no brakes and had to retire before taking the green. That moved Heiderscheidt up to row two alongside Schuette. Sparks was able to get away from the field on the start and left Heiskell, Heiderscheidt and West to fight it out for runner up. As the checkers flew on the heat, Sparks took the win ahead of Heiderscheidt, Heiskell, West, Schuette, and Drost.

Head two was led to the green by West and Drost with West getting the early lead ahead of Heiderscheidt who started inside row two. Krogman-Jones and Sparks battled for a lap before Sparks moved into the third running position behind the lead duo. West’s continued development turned into a strong run holding off challenges from Heiderscheidt resulting in West’s first heat win at Plessis this season. Heiderscheidt held off Sparks for second while Krogman-Jones, Schuette, and Drost finished out the heat two field.

The second feature of the day saw Sparks and Heiderscheidt again on the front row but this time Sparks gained the early lead. The laps clicked off steadily as Sparks made his way into lapped traffic. Heiderscheidt was also moving through but brought out a caution when contact was made with the Schuette kart, sending him spinning and Heiderscheidt to the tail of the field. On the restart, West was on Sparks’s rear bumper and held close for several laps. Heiderscheidt quickly moved into fourth but was hung up in traffic. Sparks was able to clear lap traffic easily while the rest of the field was caught in a pack. As Sparks came around with two laps remaining, he closed in on the back of everyone and claimed the feature win. In the traffic, West pulled out to take second and Heiderscheidt made a pass at the end to take third ahead of Krogman-Jones, Schuette, and Drost. Heiskell was unable to finish after mechanical breakdown early in the race.
