Freeman 12th in season opener at Volusia Speedway Park

Payton Freeman unloaded the Team 22 Inc. No. 22 Longhorn Chassis on Thursday afternoon at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) to kick off the 2023 campaign with the fourth annual Sunshine Nationals.

With 47 World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series entries on the grounds for the tour opener, Freeman raced his way into the feature via a fifth-to-second charge in his B-Main after getting behind the eight-ball in his time trial session. Starting in 20th, Freeman passed eight cars in the 25-lap affair to finish 12th.

For another $8,000-to-win event on Friday, Payton recorded a pair of fifth-place finishes in his heat race and B-Main, forcing him to use a provisional into the A-Main. Rolling off 25th, Freeman jumped five positions to salvage a 20th-place outing.

An unfavorable forecast for Saturday’s program forced officials to cancel the Sunshine Nationals finale.
