Brian Brown – Putting Things in Perspective!
It was a tough ending to the weekend for Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 race team. A heat race incident at Knoxville Saturday saw a large mud clod enter the cockpit, injuring Brian’s arm and ending the night. Fortunately, though the arm is hurting, it is not broken. The accident put things in perspective for Brian and the team moving forward.
Things started for you Wednesday night with the World of Outlaws at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City.
We were second quick hot lapping. In qualifying, we went the same speed and everyone else got faster. To qualify that badly (17th) was disappointing. It just puts you behind the eight-ball all night long.
You looked better in the heat race after starting sixth.
We made a big move there on the start and got up to fourth. We just kind of rode around at that point.
You ended up finishing fifteenth in the feature.
We worked to free our car up all night long. It was just way too tight. For 30 laps, the car was driving me. I felt like I was on a roller coaster and the car was just driving me around the track. We just kind of wiped that one away.
It had been a while since you’d raced at Huset’s Speedway. You timed in well.
It was good to be back there. They had a great crowd for the NSL. We came out somewhat early and we were fifth quick. We were happy with that. We felt good about moving up in the heat too (fifth to third) when there wasn’t much passing going on.
You redrew the seven, but the feature got off to a rocky start.
On the start, I’m not sure what happened. Everyone got bottled up, and I ran into the back of Austin McCarl. That knocked our nose wing off right from the start. Our car was so good all night long, that was just frustrating to have that happen.
You hung in there and stayed in the top ten.
We were running around there at 70%. We were still able to compete and stay out there. In my eyes, we were able to salvage something. We could have had a DNF, but to finish eighth was really a win for us.
You were back at Knoxville with the FVP National Sprint League Saturday.
We hot lapped quick time. We just hit the holes wrong in one and two in qualifying. We were sixth quick.
You started in a familiar spot, row three, for your heat.
We knew the heat would be tough with the quality of cars we had. I didn’t get the best start in the world. I made a bad decision after the first lap. I thought Ian (Madsen) was going to the bottom, and he changed his mind and went to the top. I turned to go underneath him, and a clod from his car came through the arm guard and banged my arm up pretty good.
That ended the night early.
We’ve been saying all year that it couldn’t get much worse, but when you’re sitting in the hospital not knowing what’s wrong with your arm, your sentiments change. It makes those bad pill draws and bad nights on the track look not so bad.
Things like this can really change your perspective, can’t they?
Our outlook is going to change a little bit once we get my arm back where it should be. We’re going to do the best with what’s given to us. Some nights, running sixth or seventh isn’t what you want, but it’s definitely better than not being able to race. We got a second opinion on the arm this morning, and it’s not broken. We’re very thankful for that.
