Fischer back on track at the Fall Fling

Two loooong months have passed since Fischer Racing hit the track last. With a mechanical issue keeping the team from a double-header race in Missouri, mother nature had her way with the subsequent three planned events in Oklahoma. Luckily, a beautiful Saturday was provided to get in the final day of the Fall Fling at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, OK. The POWRi West midget series joined the ASCS winged sprints for a jam packed night of racing, competing against 47 midgets on the ¼ mile clay oval.

The Flying Tee Golf sponsored #24 started P8 in heat race #2 for the evening. The track was good but the setup missed the mark, creating a tight handling racecar for Hunter Fischer. After sliding back to 10th, Hunter got the car back into the 8th position for the checker. This would put him in the C feature, starting third row outside (P6) for another 10 lap shootout. The team would need to finish in the top 4 to transfer to the back of the B feature. Anticipating the track to begin drying out, the car was left alone and the track came to us. Hunter was able to pilot the #24 into the 3rd position, but got beat to the line at the checker to finish in the final transfer spot. Another 15 laps would be taken for the B feature, where the top 4 would tag the rear of the A feature. Starting last in the 18th position, it was a long road to make it to the front. Hunter did a great job working the track and finding a good line to run, gaining 6 positions to finish in 12th. Unable to transfer naturally into the A feature, Fischer Racing was able to use a provisional to start 22nd as a benefit of ranking in the top 10 within the POWRi West point standings. The team took preparations for another 25 laps of competition by changing tires and making a few more adjustments to the car. The car responded favorably as Hunter was able to pilot the Boss Chassis, Esslinger powered, midget up to 11th place using the top and bottom grooves of the track. Typical of the team’s luck this year, the car’s battery did not have the longevity to last 58 green flag laps over the evening, giving up with 5 laps to go. Another top 10 was within grasp, but we have to take the good with the bad. The car ran great after having the head repaired (thanks to Hunt Racing Engines and Jet Motorsports for the help)! Plus, Hunter kept the car out of trouble and rolled it back into the trailer in one piece. If luck decides to be kind to us, we should have a great finish one of these days! ??

On the brighter side, we enjoyed hosting our friends and sponsors in the pits between races. Zach Walker and his family from Flying Tee Golf were able to come out and see the car in its natural environment. Hunter gave his son a seat in the cockpit to see the view and gain an appreciation for the cramped quarters these racecar drivers endure to put on an incredible show. Todd Carrico from B&C Custom Woodworks made it out as well to support the team and see some great racing. Skip Wendt from Skip’s Performance Corner came out to wrench on the car and provide technical knowledge throughout the night. His help is greatly appreciated and takes some of the heat off of the crew chief (but the battery issue is still dad’s fault!) Friends, Rick James and his young daughter came out to enjoy the cars and some nachos. Mom, sister Taylor, and favorite niece Alaska even made it out to the track for as long as the 3 year old could stand herself! Many other friends came out in support of Hunter and we greatly appreciate everyone!

Creek County Speedway is a great track and the closest thing we can call a home track. Hopefully we will get more races there next year. Our final race of the year will be in Kennedale, TX on November 9-10 at Kennedale Speedway Park. Competing against the POWRi National midget series, the POWRi West series will vie for the POWRi champion title. Come out and support the final race of the season and don’t forget to support those (sponsors) that support racing!
