Amantea Soaks Up Experience Throughout First Indiana Sprint Week

Inside Line Promotions – BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (July 31, 2023) – Joey Amantea enjoyed his first experience of Indiana Sprint Week as he made a trio of USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars main events against the top non-wing drivers in the country.

In the end, Amantea placed 19th in the event standings and third in passing points out of nearly 100 competitors who competed during the week and a half spectacle.

“We went out there and showed we can compete with them,” he said. “I’m super happy that we got through the week and have a car coming back home. One thing I’ve had to adapt racing with these guys is them being on kill from the time you put heat in the engine. They are the best at what they do. It’s great to learn their ways.”

The best run of Indiana Sprint Week occurred on July 23 at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind., where Amantea passed the second-most drivers during a charge from 18th to seventh. It was his career-best result with the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars.

“Lawrenceburg is terrifying,” he said. “That place absolutely scared me from hot laps to the end of the feature. Our car was pretty good there. The track started to build a really big cushion where cars started to flip off it. I started running the bottom and middle of the track and passed cars left and right. We could go where other cars weren’t and could make gains.”

The outing was the first of three straight A Main starts for Amantea, who hustled from 21st to 13th at Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis, Ind., on July 24.

“A bad pill draw put a damper on our time trial run because the track was shot when we went out,” he said. “In the B Main we picked up the pace and passed a few cars to get the final transfer spot. Then in the feature we rolled the middle and bided our time. We were able to come home with a solid 13th place. I was pretty happy because I didn’t even think we were going to make the show.”

Amantea also made the main event on July 26 at Terre Haute Action Track in Terre Haute, Ind. Unfortunately, an early crash destroyed the race car and forced the team to use a back-up car for the remainder of Indiana Sprint Week.

“We got wrecked running the bottom,” he said. “It was a pretty raw deal because I felt we were going to be pretty quick. It dug me into the ground and we went flipping through air.”

Amantea ended in the B Main during the other three Indiana Sprint Week races he ran – July 21 at Gas City I-69 Speedway in Gas City, Ind.; July 22 at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Ind.; and July 28 at Bloomington Speedway.

“It was definitely a great experience,” he said. “I didn’t think we’d make three shows and we’d be as fast as we were. We missed the feature at Kokomo by a front bumper after starting in the C Main. It was a long and tiring week, but I was happy I got to experience it.”

Amantea plans on racing this Saturday at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa., with the Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars.
