Brooke Tatnell Adds Granite City Speedway To His Win List

Sauk Rapids, MN

Brooke Tatnell has won sprint car races at numerous tracks here in the United States and over in his home country of Australia. On Sunday night July 20 Tatnell added the Granite City Speedway in Sauk Rapids, MN to that list. Tatnell passed race leader Davey Heskin on lap 10 and led the remainder of the nonstop 25 lap feature. Tony Norem, who had started fifth and fell back to ninth on the opening lap, roared back up through the field and was closing fast on Tatnell when the checkers waved. Tatnell, his family, and crew from the Ron Olson #34 sprinter celebrated in Anderson's Pure Maple Syrup/Rock Auto Victory Lane following his 28th career UMSS sprint car win.

The usual double round of qualifiers for the UMSS saw Heskin and Sye Anderson top the heat races while Norem and Jerry Richert, Jr. won the Challenge races. Norem was high point man, and during the driver autograph session at intermission a young race fan pulled the five pill for the feature race invert. This put Richert and Anderson on the front row.

Davey Heskin got a great start in his Donnohue #91 sprinter to lead the opening lap. Heskin quickly extended his lead over the next couple of laps, but Tatnell soon reeled him in and began calculating his move for the top spot. That move came right at the end of lap 10, as Tatnell sped around Heskin for the lead. Meanwhile, Tony Norem was overcoming his opening lap bobble which saw him slip back to ninth in the running order. At the halfway mark Norem was up to sixth, and that is when he really started going forward. To conclude lap 20, Norem edged by Heskin for second. Over the next five laps, Norem reeled in Tatnell but ran out of laps before he could make a bid for the lead. Leading UMSS rookie Ryan Bowers got by Heskin on the final lap to finish third with fellow rookie contender Jamey Ogston close behind in fifth. The two rookie drivers currently sit second and third in the UMSS point standings behind two-time UMSS Champion Jerry Richert, Jr.

Coming up on Friday July 25 at the St. Croix Valley Raceway will be the 2nd Annual UMSS Dan Grams Memorial race paying $1,300 to win. Defending champion Davey Heskin will defend his title, but a host of other strong competitors will be looking for their first UMSS Dan Grams Memorial victory. The following night, the UMSS winged sprints will race at the Cedar Lake Speedway for the Summer Sprint Special. The Traditional non-winged sprints will also be on the program each night.
