Inside Line Promotions – BILLINGS, Mont. (June 25, 2019) – Cody Masse earned the best result of his sprint car racing career when he crossed the finish line second last Saturday at Big Sky Speedway.

“It was an awesome night for us,” said Masse, whose previous best performances were a pair of fourth-place finishes in 2017 and 2018. “The car was really fast for the second week in a row. We were able to take some things we learned the week before in Great Falls and apply them in Billings. It was great to run up front all night long, especially at what had been one of our worst tracks in the past.”

Masse’s night began by outlasting the field for the win in his ASCS Frontier Region heat race.

“We were supposed to start third in our heat, but the car that was scheduled to start on the pole had some issues and moved to the rear, putting us on the pole,” he said. “I led every lap, but it was a bit frustrating since there were about five restarts. But I got lots of practice with leading on restarts so that was nice. And it was the second week in a row that we won a heat race and that helped keep our momentum going.”

Masse’s heat race victory put him in the redraw for the first four starting spots in the feature and he drew the pole position.

“We got a pretty good start and led the first lap,” he said. “I got passed on Lap 2, but the caution came out and I got the lead back on the restart. I led for several more laps after the race restarted when the caution came out just as I got passed for the lead again so I got another chance with the lead on the next restart.

“There was a bit of a mixup on the next restart. I didn’t know we were coming to the green since they didn’t say it over the radio like they had every time before that, so I wasn’t prepared for it when I saw it waving. I got passed on the restart, but I don’t feel like I have a right to complain since I’d been given plenty of chances before then. I fell into second and ran there the rest of the race. I was never challenged for it and didn’t feel anyone close to me.”

The performance not only marked his best finish, but also continued a string of solid numbers for the season.

“The most top 10s we’ve had in a season before this year was five,” he said. “We already have five top 10s in five races this year. I only had one top 10 in Billings before. We still have some work to do, but we’re making great progress. It’s exciting.”

Masse will be off this weekend before returning to Big Sky Speedway on July 6 with the ASCS Frontier Region.

“While we have some momentum going, it will be nice to have a weekend off since we have a busy time coming up,” he said. “We’re looking forward to returning to Billings following our run there and with what we learned. We also anticipate a larger field of cars since it won’t be a make-up race like this one.”
