Inside Line Promotions – PEORIA, Ariz. (March 2, 2020) – Sams LaMountain Racing driver Danny Sams III improved throughout the season-opening Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event last weekend.

Sams III invaded Canyon Speedway Park for the first time in his career and faced more than 50 competitors at the tricky track. He placed seventh in a heat race before charging from 14th to seventh in a B Main on Friday.

“The first night we struggled early,” he said. “We pulled a bad pill and it was hard to move forward. We gained seven spots in the B Main, but it was too little too late. We were able to learn a lot. We built big time off the first night to the second.”

It showed on Saturday as Sams III maneuvered from seventh to third place in a heat race and from sixth to fourth place in a qualifier. That ranked him fourth in overall points out of the 50-plus drivers.

“That put us in a great spot,” he said. “We started fourth in the main event, but unfortunately had a tire problem and a car problem that made the car extremely unbalanced. We couldn’t get the car into the track to move forward. Right away we lost it and by the time the rubber came in, making it more under control, we had already fallen back pretty fast.”

Sams III held on for a 19th-place finish. He is currently tied for second in the Rookie of the Year Award standings after the first two nights of the season.

“I have a lot of confidence being able to run that good in the beginning on Saturday,” he said. “We’re racing somewhere that’s new to us again, but we’re excited to head to California this weekend.”

Next up for the team is a trio of ASCS National Tour races – Friday at Merced Speedway in Merced, Calif.; Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif.; and Sunday at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, Calif. It will be the team’s debut at all three ovals.
