Inside Line Promotions – PEORIA, Ariz. (March 3, 2020) – Dominic Scelzi was one of only three drivers to earn a pair of top-five finishes last weekend during a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader at Canyon Speedway Park, where more than 50 drivers competed.

Scelzi finished fourth on Friday before he rallied from 14th to fifth on Saturday.

“All in all it was a really good weekend,” he said. “Both our family cars showed a lot of speed. If some restarts played out differently I felt we had a shot of winning. I had an awesome race car to drive.”

The event began on Friday with Scelzi advancing from fourth to third place in a heat race and from second to win a qualifier, which ranked him fourth in overall points.

“I felt a little rusty in the heat and probably didn’t take the chances I should have, but we still got a spot to finish third,” he said. “I was more aggressive in the qualifier and won the start, which was key for winning the race. In the feature we ran fourth for probably 10 to 12 laps. Someone got messed up in front of me and then I got by Justin (Sanders) for second. At that point I thought we’d run second. Gio (Scelzi) got by me the next lap. He and I raced back and forth for a lap or two. He got me in turn four and then I overshot my entry into turn one. Justin was able to get back by me for third. At that point the rubber came in and we ran fourth the rest of the race.”

Scelzi enjoyed similar success on Saturday despite a challenging start to the night. He maneuvered from seventh to fifth place in heat race before a qualifier win locked him into the 14th starting position for the main event.

“We had a bad draw and the track was extremely wet in the heat race,” he said. “As soon as we went green I jumped out of the grease and was able to get a couple of cars, which was pretty good for where we started. We were 24th in points and that put us on the pole of a qualifier. We won that, which moved us up to 14th in points. From the drop of the green flag in the feature I felt like we were every bit as good as (Sam) Hafertepe Jr. and Sanders. We got to seventh in five laps. At that point the rubber was starting to be apparent. It took me five more laps to get to fifth. Once we got to fifth it was full-blown rubber. I ran on the bumper of third and fourth the rest of the race. You had to just be in line.”

Scelzi’s fifth-place finish gives the team momentum as it tackles a trio of ASCS National Tour races this Friday at Merced Speedway in Merced, Calif.; Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif.; and Sunday at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, Calif.

“I think I’ve made four or five laps around Merced and that was probably eight years ago,” he said. “Placerville is a place I’ve struggled at and I’ve been hot and cold at Petaluma. I’m unsure of what to expect, but it’ll be our first time there with Jimmy (Carr) so that’s a plus. All in all I’m hoping we can keep our good speed and be competitive each night.”
