Justin Kay wins 45th Yankee Dirt Track Classic at Davenport

Anthony Ainslie (Davenport, IA) -- It was an East vs. West showdown on a Saturday night under the lights for the relocated Yankee Dirt Track Classic at Davenport Speedway.

The 45th running of the Yankee was initially slated to be ran at Farley, Iowa’s 300 Raceway. However, after outside conditions caused the cancellation of the race, Davenport Speedway stepped up to host the race, and so Davenport became only the third different track to run the race. It was also the first time in 31 years since the last time the Yankee switched locations.

The Malvern Bank and Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models Series saw their biggest field of cars all season long as 49 cars from four states made the trip out to the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds for a chance to add their name to the list of winners of the Yankee.

Defending West Series Champion started the night by being the top qualifier. The Norfolk, Nebraska driver clocked in at a blistering 14.120 seconds. While the Nebraska was on top of the speed charts, six Iowans took the night’s six heat races. Derrick Stewart, Chad Holladay, Corey Dripps, Jeff Tharp, Jason Hahne, and Jesse Sobbing all guaranteed their spots in the big show with heat race wins. Matt Ryan and Jeff Aikey won the night’s two B features. After provisionals were determined, a massive 28-car field took to the track for the 60-lap main event.

Nick Marolf was quick to jump to the early race lead. Justin Kay and Jeff Larson gave chase early on, but the Moscow, Iowa driver Marolf was up to the challenge. Unfortunately, his race was cut short as motor troubles took Marolf out of the race while leading on lap 14.

Marolf’s misfortunes handed the lead over to Kay. Larson tried to run the bottom lane and the top lane, but he could not find a way around Kay. Kay, the East Series Point Leader proceeded to extend his race lead.

After the race went caution-free for the entire 60-lap distance, Kay picked up the $6,045 payday. Kay managed to lap all the way up to the sixth-place car. The win is his fourth on the year. It was also Kay’s ninth career series win which put him fourth on the all-time win list.

Jeff Larson would have to settle for second while Tad Pospisil came in third. Tyler Bruening was fourth, and Chad Holladay rounded out the top five. Jake Neal was the hard charger on the race as the Omaha native came home ninth after starting back in 23rd.

Only two races remain on the 2022 season. Next up, the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series returns to action on Sunday with their second visit to the East Moline Speedway in East Moline, Illinois. After that, the East and West Series come back together on October 15th for the final race at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska.
