Davis Tops A Wild Modified Feature At Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (August 22)

By: Todd Narveson

Heavy rains on Friday night and into the early morning on Saturday forced the track prep crew at Deer Creek Speedway to scramble. Not able to get on to the speedway until early afternoon, the track worked hard to get things ready to go. The show was started about an hour later than usual.

This week’s program was supported by Land Resource Management and Realty, Randy & Sandy Norby, Gwen Schumeier along with the Stacyville, St. Ansgar and Osage, Iowa American Legions.

After the heat races were completed, the track prep crew went back to work on the surface. After about an hour delay, the National Fleet Graphics USRA B-Mods rolled on to the track for their 18-lap race.

Michael Wytaske and Brandon Maitland started in row one of the 23-car pack of cars.  Maitland gained the early lead with Wytaske close behind. Jim Chisholm got to third and then slipped past Wytaske for second. Eric Thill drove to fourth, but then retired from the race on lap six.

Maitland and Chisholm drove away from the pack and then started to close in on the rear of the field. Chisholm got close, but Maitland negotiated the lapped cars and led the rest of the way for his second straight win and third at the track this season. Scott Demmer, Garitt Wytaske and Andrew Bleess rounded out the top five.

There was extra money up for grabs in the Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stock feature. A secret donor put up and extra $250 for the winner, $100 for second and $50 for third thru fifth place.

It would take two attempts to get the race underway. Kevin Vogt took the early lead but Zach Elward was on the move. Elward drove past Jason Newkirk and Bernie Adams for second before a scramble took place in turn two. Jason Newkirk ended up stopped on the backstretch and was charged with the yellow.

On the restart, Elward was able to hold back Adams and set after Vogt. Elward glided past t the lead on lap four. Danny Richards passed Bernie Adams for third and then got by Vogt for second on lap six. A pair of cautions came out on lap 11 and to slow the race.

From there Elward led the rest of the way for the win, his third of the year. Richards got another top five finish in second with Nick Schwebach in the third spot. Cole Richards would finish in fourth and Vogt ended up fifth.

A melee on the first lap of the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature eliminated point leader Mitch Weiss along with Kobie Kath and Spencer Stock. Nate Erickson held the early lead and was pursued by Christopher Deno and Jacob Toepper.

Dylan Goettl was the car on the move from row four. Goettl entered the top five and then moved to fourth and brought Don Schaefer along to fifth. Goettl then slipped past Toepper for third and then tried to chase down the lead duo. Erickson and Deno ran side-by-side on occasion for the lead.

Goettl passed Deno for second and then made the pass of Erickson for the lead on lap eight. Goettl took off from there to take his second win of the season. Erickson held on to second with Schaefer in third. Peter Lueschner came from 10th to finish fourth and Ryan Goergen was fifth.

Neil Eckhart jumped out to the lead in the 20-lap Crenlo WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Dylan Kromschroeder passed Bill Clemens for second and closed in on Eckhart. Jeff Brauer and Bill Clemens had a good battle for third going on. Brauer would get by and took off after the leaders.

Kromschroeder mounted a challenge to Eckhart and Brauer scooted in to make it three-wide at one point. The top three continued to run close through the middle portion of the race. Kromschroeder had several shots at Eckhart, but he just could not make the pass for the lead.

Eckhart would take the checkered flag first to win his first of the season and career win number 33 at Deer Creek. Kromschroeder’s valliant effort ended in second with Brauer in third. Clemens would finish in the fourth spot and Ryan Wiome was fifth.

The Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modified main event was a wild on to say the least. Darwyn Karau and Jacob Bleess led the 21-car Modified feature to the green flag. Bleess took the early advantage while Josh Angst challenged Karau for second. J.T. Wasmund, Joe Ludemann and Brandon Davis were going at it for fourth. Jacob Stark stalled on lap seven to bring out the caution flag.

Angst darted to second on the start and Davis blew by Wasmund and Karau to third. Jason Cummins who started 12th was up in to the top five. Bleess was out front and Davis then moved past Angst for second on lap 12. Another yellow slowed the pace and another wild restart ensued.

Bleess again took off, but Cummins drove to fourth on the start and then got by Angst for third on lap 16. Darwyn Karau slowed and came to a stop in turn four on lap 17 to triggered another yellow. Another crazy restart took place when Cummins drove low on Davis and Bleess in turn one and took the lead. Bleess jumped the cushion and pounded the wall and the yellow flag returned.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any crazier the green flag returned. Cummins went over the cushion and brushed the wall in turn two. That allowed Davis and Angst to drive by into first and second. J.D. Auringer was also on the fly to third, but his run ended when he slowed and pulled off a couple of laps later.

Davis led the remainder of the race two make it two straight. Angst would finish in second with Cummins in third. Wasmund ended up in the fourth spot and Ludemann was fifth.
