Bruening returns to Victory Lane in Hoker East Series’ debut at Dubuque

By Anthony Ainslie (Dubuque, IA) -- Another familiar face added their name to the winner list in 2021 with the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models East in the tour’s first ever visit to the Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway on Thursday.

The quarter-mile bullring at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds played host to the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series for the first time for round 14 for the 2021 season. The race marked the first race of the final tripleheader weekend of the year for the East Series. A stout field of 30 late models made the trip on a late September evening in Eastern Iowa.

Andy Eckrich brought the field to the green flag from the pole in the 30-lap main event. The Oxford, Iowa driver broke out to an early lead. While he led, Tyler Bruening made good use of the outside line and charged his way to the front and challenged Eckrich for the lead.

Eckrich and Bruening went back and forth using the high and low lanes in their duel for the lead. The battle spilled over into lapped traffic, but still, the two Iowa natives didn’t back down. Bruening took the lead on lap six, and wasn’t until lap 12 when Eckrich officially took the lead back. Bruening took the lead back and kept with 14 laps remaining right before a spin in turn one brought the race under caution with 13 laps left.

After the second and final caution with 11 laps to go, Bruening pulled away from the rest of the field, and the Decorah, Iowa native, who had been chasing national late model tours, came back to one of his home tracks and took the win. It was his first official East Series win and his fifth with the Malvern Bank/Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models Series. Bruening also makes him the 17th different winner of the 2021 season between both East and West tours.

Andy Eckrich came home second after his hard-fought battle with Bruening, and Spencer charged late in the race to come in third. Jason Rauen took fourth, and Luke Goedert rounded out the top five.

The tripleheader weekend continues with the East Series’ second and final visit of the year to the West Liberty Raceway in West Liberty on Friday and will then wrap up with the Iowa Governor’s Cup at the Davenport Speedway on Saturday. Then, the East and West tours come together to crown both champions on October 1st and 2nd at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska.
