Jason Rauen wins Yankee Dirt Track Classic
By Anthony Ainslie (Farley, IA) -- The hometown hero comes through big as Jason Rauen wrote his name in the record books as the newest winner of the Yankee Dirt Track Classic Saturday night.
Saturday’s finale for the Classic served as round 12 for the Malvern Bank and Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Model Series. A strong field of 41 cars returned for the finale at the 300 Raceway in Farley, Iowa. At the end of the night, 26 cars made the field for the 50-lap main event for the $10,000 top prize.

Farley native Jason Rauen brought the field down to the green flag from the pole position, and he jumped out into the early lead while Bill Leighton Jr. settled into second. Jeff Aikey and Cory Dumpert waged a close battle for the sixth spot in the early going until Aikey went around in turn four bringing the first caution out 19 laps into the race.
The big incident happened while under caution. As the field was being re-aligned, a transformer in the power system blew out causing all of the track’s lights to go out issuing a red flag.
After an almost two-hour delay, the power was restored and racing resumed. Rauen continued to lead. However, Leighton used the top lane and the middle lane occasionally as Rauen worked lapped traffic.
In the final ten laps, Leighton caught up to Rauen and challenged him for the lead. The duo went side by side for multiple laps with Leighton trying to get under Rauen for the lead.
The battle for the lead was interrupted by a caution coming out with four laps to go for point leader Tad Pospisil had a tire go flat while running third. This set up a dash to the finish. Rauen jumped out ahead and was not challenged for the final laps. He would go on to score the $10,000 and capture his first career Yankee Dirt Track Classic title.
Bill Leighton Jr. would have to settle for second while Jeff Tharp came in third. Cory Dumpert came in fourth, and Friday’s feature winner Justin Zeitner rounded out the top five.
With the Yankee Dirt Track Classic in the books, The Malvern Bank West Series returns to action on Saturday, September 12th for the Midwest Fall Brawl at I-80 Speedway. Another race at I-80 will be the following week on the 19th before the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series makes its third and final visit to the Davenport Speedway in Davenport, Iowa.
