Preston Picks Up First Career 410 Win, Bittner Gets 2nd Career PRS Win, Snook Wins 3rd Straight at Port Royal
Port Royal, PA -- There was a stout field of 31 410 sprint cars signed in for competition on Saturday night, and a new driver was able to park in Kish Bank victory lane. Jonathan Preston would lead all 25 laps to claim his first career victory, not only at Port Royal Speedway, but in his career behind the wheel of a 410 sprint car.
Preston would line up alongside Mike Thompson to make up the front row of the 25 lap A-main event. The first attempt at a start would be a struggle for Preston as he would bobble the car off the fourth corner and drop multiple positions.
To Preston's favor however, an accident in turn four involving Garrett Bard and Zack Newlin, before the completion of the first lap, would reset the field.
Following another caution on the restart due to a false start by Preston, the third take at starting the feature would see Preston take the early lead.
The driver from Geneva, New York would grow his lead to as much as 2.5 seconds during the A-main event, only to see it dwindle to 0.500 seconds with just 6 laps remaining.
Steve Buckwalter, who rolled off from the sixth starting spot, would close in on Preston in the waning laps of the race. A damaged front nose wing however, would hinder Buckwalter's charge to the front as the handling became a struggle for the second place driver.
A caution with just 2 laps to go from Austin Bishop spinning on the backstretch would restack the field behind Preston and give Buckwalter and company one last shot to steal the win away from the leader.
Preston would get a solid restart and build his lead to over 1.4 seconds in the final two laps to hold on for the win.
Jeff Halligan and Brock Zearfoss would both make last corner passes on Steve Buckwalter to steal away the final two podium spots in that order.
Derek Hauck would win the J&S Classics Warrior Award due to the nine pill being drawn in victory lane, and Nash Ely would be awarded the Ramsey's Car Wash Hard Charger for passing eleven cars during the A-main.
For the Penns Valley Meat Market 305 sprint cars, Timmy Bittner would pick up his second career Port Royal Speedway win by making a pass for the lead with just six laps remaining.
Erin Statler would start alongside Paul Moyer in the 20 lap A-main event. Statler would take the early lead off of the initial start.
Statler would lead the field through the opening 15 laps before she would start to face challenges, not only from Timmy Bittner, but Doug Dodson included.
With fourteen of the scheduled twenty laps completed, Bittner would get by Statler off of turn four for the lead and Dodson would follow suit in the next two corners.
Quickly after losing the lead, Statler would find herself in trouble, involved in a red flag wreck in turns three and four on the very same lap.
Following the clean up, Bittner would lead the field back to green. Dodson would challenge Bittner, momentarily, through the first two corners, but Bittner was strong through the corners to hold on to the lead.
Bittner would hold on for the final six laps to pick up the win with Dodson finishing in the runner up spot and Josh Spicer finishing in third.
In Zimmerman Truck Repair limited late model competition, Lane Snook would get his third straight in as many races at Port Royal Speedway.
Matt Murphy and Eric Irvin would lead the field to green in the 20 lap A-main event with Irving taking the advantage on the opening lap.
Irving would lead while facing challenges from Murphy over the opening eleven laps before the caution lights would come on for a slowing Dan Zechman on the front stretch.
With the field reset with just nine laps to go, Irvin would continue to lead the field.
Murphy would try to pull alongside Irvin for the lead through the first two corners but couldn't make the pass. This allowed Lane Snook, who had been running in third, to blow passed the 21M of Murphy and set his sights on Irvin.
Snook would attempt a pass for the lead in turns one and two and would complete the pass, but the caution flag would wave shortly there after as Ryan Zook, while battling for third, would spin around the ring in turn two.
On the restart with six to go, Snook would look to make a sliding move on Irvin, but Irvin would mount speed on the top side of the corner to power back by to stay in front.
Snook would keep pace with Irvin over the next three laps, and with three laps remaining would go for another sliding pass on Irvin, with the move, this time, being enough to get in front.
Snook would lead the remaining three laps to pick up the win.
Devin Hart would get by Irvin on the same lap to take away the runner up spot and Matt Murphy would get by Irvin as well to round out the top three.
Port Royal Speedway will be off from racing action next weekend.
The track will return to competition on August 16th for the 19th Annual Living Legends Dream Race presented by Mike Cleck Paving and Sealcoating.
