Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Dimmitt enjoying breakthrough season in USRA Stock Cars

WHEATLAND, MO. (July 19, 2023) - No matter what happens the rest of the season, Waylon Dimmitt will go in the books as one of Lucas Oil Speedway’s breakout drivers in the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series.

Dimmitt already has three victories in the O’Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Car division and eight overall in 21 events at regional tracks. Last year, he scored only one feature win in 41 attempts and that came on opening night at Dallas County Speedway.

“I’ve been really pleased,” Dimmitt said of his 2023 results. “Last year we really struggled. We picked up a win the first night and never could get the car like we wanted it. The car’s got better and I’ve grown a lot this year as a driver. It’s been an awesome season so far.”

Dimmitt, of Camdenton, will look to add another victory on Saturday night when the USRA Stock Cars headline Ozarks Food Harvest Food Drive Night Presented by OzarksFirst.com, with a $750-to-win, 25-lap feature. Fans bringing four non-perishable food items will be admitted free.

Even with this season's success, it seems that there’s still plenty of upside for Dimmitt, who's in a home-built chassis that he and brother Darrell Hurt put together before last season.

“We’re still till learning on it every time we go out,” Dimmitt said, calling the car-building experience “a lot of fun.”

“I think building them is as much fun as driving them,” Dimmitt added. “My brother also races Stock Cars. He’s a genius when it comes to that stuff. We built our own Pure Stocks before and when I asked him if he wanted to help me build a Stock Car we just kind of went from there.”

Dimmitt, 31, is in his fourth season of racing. He was a little later than most to catch the racing bug. He grew up in Illinois and, while he had a cousin who raced Modifieds at the time, he never was much for going to the track.

“I moved down here in 2019 and we went to Lake Ozark Speedway and watched some sprint cars,” Dimmitt said. “Ever since then, I’ve had an itch for it.”

Dimmitt began driving Pure Stock, then competed in B-Mods for a season. The last two years, he’s found a home in the USRA Modified class.

“I had a pretty good run in Pure Stocks, but I just like the way the full-body cars drive a little better,” he said. “It’s a little closer racing. You can rub a little bit without tearing up as much.

“The set-up is not quite as critical as in a B-Mod or A-Mod. There’s a little less adjusting to do between races. You kind of go out there and drive it and change your driving style to fit the track.”

Dimmitt is fifth in Lucas Oil Speedway points, despite missing four races. When he’s been at the track, he’s been ultra-consistent with the trio of wins and going 9-for-9 in top-five finishes. He’s ninth in USRA Stock Car national points.

“I would really like to finish top-5 in national points and wait for USRA Nationals to come back to Lucas and have a good run there,” he said of looking ahead to October’s Summit USRA Nationals at Wheatland. “I thought last year’s Nationals was awesome. It was kind of cool going out there running with the best of the best and watching what they do.

“I’m pretty excited for this year. We had a real good run last year until a couple of laps to go and got taken out. So we hope for better this year.”

Dimmitt does nearly all the weekly maintenance on the car himself, but credits Colson Kirk and Bryan Larimore for their set-up expertise. Team sponsors include The Butcher Shop of Camdenton, KMH Contracting, Yeoman Race Engines, Dirt Track Specialist, Hulett Chevrolet, B&B, Dependable Towing and Ozark Custom Apparel.

In addition to the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifieds, Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods and Hermitage Lumber Late Models will be in action on Saturday.

The Midwest Muscle Car Club also will be attending as they display their cars on the midway prior to the action and through intermission.

Fans with four non-perishable food items will get free admission to the races. Food items can be dropped off after gates open at 5 p.m. Hot laps begin at 6:30 and racing at 7:05.
