Brian Brown – Hoping for Another Jackson Nationals Crown!

Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team head into Friday and Saturday’s Jackson Nationals in Minnesota with some confidence. The two-time champ of the event will aim for the $25,000 top prize this time with some confidence and a needed gain in speed in his racecar as of late. The FVP National Sprint League event will be followed by another on Sunday at Huset’s Speedway in South Dakota. Last weekend, the Grain Valley, Missouri driver raced in his home state Randolph County Raceway near Moberly, Friday, Knoxville Raceway in Iowa on Saturday, and Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin Sunday.

Despite coming out late, you still timed in second quick Friday in Moberly with the NSL.

Moberly’s always been a track we’ve had success at in a 360. We had high hopes going in. Second quick was a good start for us. We were good in the heat (fourth to second) and that put us in the redraw.

The draw saw you starting fourth in the feature. You were definitely fast before you had some issues.

We were riding around there biding our time. We were about a half straightaway behind Danny (Lasoski) and Terry (McCarl). We hooked a hole. Schoenfeld builds the best headers on the market. We hit that hole and it bent the header so much it broke it off at the phalange. We were down three cylinders, so we pulled off. It was unfortunate, because we felt we had a top three car for sure.

You came fast out of the gates again at Knoxville on Saturday.

We were excited to get back to Knoxville after the Nationals. We’d found some speed that we’d been lacking there all year long. As soon as we rolled out of the trailer, we were as good as anyone. We were second quick hot lapping, and third quick in time trials.

You were able to advance to fifth in the heat, and you started sixth in the feature. It seemed with another lap or two, you could have won that thing!

We got to third pretty quick and settled in. We could maneuver anywhere, top, bottom…anywhere we needed to go. We were able to get by (Mark) Dobmeier there late and make a last ditch effort at (leader) Justin (Henderson). It was exciting to know that we had the speed there to contend for the win, especially starting where we did.

What did you think of your visit to Sun Prairie on Sunday? It was a different track with 42 cars in house!

It was neat to go there. That’s been primarily a midget track. To have a huge crowd and such a great event with the IRA was awesome. We started off really well, second quick hot lapping. We just didn’t make the right adjustment from hot laps to qualifying. We were a little bit too free. We ended up ninth quick. We still didn’t make the right adjustment for the heat. We were able to run fifth and get in the A.

Did you tighten it up enough for the feature?

We went about halfway where we needed to be. We were still too free. We went 13th to ninth, but it felt like we were as good as the guys from fourth to eighth. Track position was key there. You can’t give up that many spots in qualifying.

You have to be excited to go for your third Jackson Nationals!

Growing up as a kid, the Jackson Nationals were in the same breath as the Knoxville Nationals, the King’s Royal, the National Open (Williams Grove) and the Gold Cup (Silver Dollar Speedway). To see it coming back the way it is with the 410’s and with the NSL paying $25,000…hopefully, it turns back into one of those marquis events every single year.

It has turned into an event again.

It’s great with all the events surrounding it…the golf tournament tomorrow, all the stuff for families, and all the events benefiting Kevin Swindell too. We race Jackson Friday and Saturday, and Sioux Falls on Sunday, so it’s another busy weekend and three more chances to pick up a few wins.
