Inside Line Promotions – OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Aug. 11, 2020) – Misfortune hampered Roger Crockett throughout last weekend in Iowa, where a broken rear end cut his 360 Knoxville Nationals short and a violent crash destroyed his race car during the Ultimate Challenge.

The busy weekend began on a promising note as Crockett qualified 18th quickest, placed fourth in a heat race and moved forward to post a seventh-place result on Friday during his preliminary night at the 30th annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank hosted by Knoxville Raceway.

That performance narrowly missed locking into the Saturday main event at the oval in Knoxville, instead placing Crockett third in the starting lineup for the B Main. He ran second for nearly the entire race before a part in the rear end broke with two laps remaining.

“That was just unfortunate because it’s not a maintenance item or something you can inspect,” he said. “I’ve never seen one break there. We had to hustle to the get car ready on Sunday afternoon for the Ultimate Challenge.”

Luck wasn’t on Crockett’s side on Sunday at Southern Iowa Speedway, which hosted the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour’s Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge presented by Searsboro Telephone Co. Crockett lined him up last in a heat race and gained two positions to finish seventh. He advanced two more spots in a qualifier to end eighth. The work in progress continued in a B Main as Crockett maneuvered from fourth to second to transfer into the back of the main event.

Unfortunately, the misfortune elevated to another level at the start of the A Main as Crockett was involved in a wild, multiple-car incident in turns three and four.

“I had nowhere to go,” he said. “They came down the track in front of me. I split the two cars wrecking, but something, a car or a piece, it ripped my right side nerf off and caught the right rear. It broke the rear arms off. The car was like floating, it hit the ground, turned and flipped. I’m extremely lucky it landed on all four wheels.

“It hit hard when I landed. I always want to get right out. I started to do my normal routine to get out. Then I could feel heat and then I heard somebody scream. It felt like I was in there for a long time.

“The way they have the bars now there’s not a lot of room when you’re wearing the Hans device and helmet. I saw Jordon (Mallett) running over so I changed how I was getting out because at that point I went out head first knowing he was going to pull me. My foot was caught and they were pulling on me. I was able to turn my foot and they pulled me out.

“I really appreciate Jordon. He got out of his car so fast. He was there immediately to help. It’s brave of someone to get out and come to a dangerous situation. I want to also thank Scott Bogucki and his crew, the Herrera Family, Blake Hahn and Dalton; a lot of people worked to make it happen. Also, thank you to Maxim Chassis, K1 RaceGear, Bell Helmets and ButlerBuilt for the great products to help make us safe.”

Crockett said his sprint car is destroyed and he will likely be sidelined for the next month until racing on Sept. 12 at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
