Chargin’ Charles Set to Defend Summer Slam Title Saturday at CSP!

Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (July 22, 2013) – Charles Davis, Jr., will try to pick off his second consecutive USAC Southwest Sprint Car score at Canyon Speedway Park as the wingless series takes to the 1/3-mile clay oval this Saturday night for the Second Annual Summer Slam.

In addition to the USAC Southwest Sprint Cars, the LoanMart Challenge Cup Sprint Cars, Micro Sprints, Viper Smart Start Pure Stocks and AMA Mod Lites will be in action as well with racing action going green at 7:00 p.m.

Davis, Jr., put at the very least a brief halt to R.J. Johnson’s CSP domination with a triumph in the last series outing atop the 1/3-mile on June 29. Johnson had reached victory lane in the four previous events.

Vying for his second CSP win in a row, Davis, Jr., also hails as reigning Summer Slam champion after topping the inaugural edition of the event last year.

Davis, Jr., enters Saturday’s action ranked second in USAC Southwest points, 86 points off R.J. Johnson’s lead pace. Johnson picked off his eighth overall series win of the season this past weekend at El Paso.

Mike Martin ranks third in USAC Southwest points, with Ronnie Clark and Shon Deskins rounding out the top five. The balance of the top ten includes Josh Pelkey, Chris Bonneau, Andrew Reinbold, Brian Hosford and Mike Bonneau.

Josh Shipley has topped five of nine LoanMart Challenge Cup Sprint car features, yet holds only a six-point advantage over Johnny Shelton, Jr., who topped the most recent feature event on July 13. Jesse Turner, Matt Lundy and Jacob Hawkins round out the current top five.

After Dustin Cormany opened strong with four wins in the initial five Micro Sprint features, Joe Scheopner has reached victory lane twice in the last three outings.

Similarly, Bo Partain won the initial four Viper Smart Start Pure Stock features of the year before the momentum shifted to Anthony Madrid, who has collected victory hardware the last three times out.

John Priest, Jr., has topped three of five AMA Mod Lite features although Chaz Baca, Jr., has won two of the last three.

Tickets for Saturday’s Second Annual Summer Slam are just $15, with a $2 discount for Military, Seniors and Students. Children ages 7-12 are $6, with children 6 and under admitted free. VIP passes are available for $20.
