MURPHY JUST SHORT OF 2 WEEKEND SWEEPS AT MARSHFIELD

5.25.2016

Coming off of a weekend sweep at Wisconsin International Raceway, Murphy planned to make his last race that he knows of for the season one to remember. With capturing the Pole and Win at WIR, he knew it would be tough to repeat it at Marshfield Speedway the following weekend.

The day started off rough as the father and son team missed the first practice. Not having been to the track in 2-3 years, he knew he had to get as much practice as he could. With only one practice under his belt he knew that Qualifying was going to be a tough one. Fortunately, the #85 Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwestern Indiana truck is fast everywhere it goes and captured the Pole position. The team knew changes had to be made as the truck was fighting an extreme tight condition from the get go and changes still needed to be made after the heat race leading into the 30 lap feature.

The invert for the Feature event put Murphy all the way back in the 10th position in a tough field of trucks. At the drop of the green, he had nowhere to go as trucks battled side by side, 4 trucks deep. By lap 8, the field started to string out and the #85 machine started making moves left and right and moved up to the 3rd position by lap 13 by the time the first caution flag flew. During the first caution, the track had lost its lights and that forced the field to come to a stop on the front stretch for roughly 10 minutes. Once the lights were back on and the track went green, Murphy quickly made it to the top spot and stayed there until lap 21 when the lights went out again. After sitting on track for 30 minutes, we were ready to have a shootout to the finish. Once the green was back out, the #85 trucks handling went away quickly and struggled to hang on to the top spot. With 4 to go, veteran of WIR #54 Jeremy Lepak, made the move past Murphy to take the win.

Murphy quoted afterwards, “Congratulations to Mr. Lepak on his first truck Win, he drove a great race. Once the green flag dropped the truck was super super tight. I know sitting on the track for 30 Minutes and the temperature dropping tremendously doesn’t help but we did what we could do with what we had. I really wanted 2 weekend sweeps in a row but hopefully we can get another shot to do it again this year.”

All of this wouldn't be possible if we didn't have our great partners like The Ronald McDonald House of Chicagoland and Northwestern Indiana, True Power Oil, Car Doctor Jr., O’Hare Auto Body, Mark Signs, and 83 & Devon CITGO.
