Inside Line Promotions – OCALA, Fla. (Feb. 16, 2018) – Tanner Thorson turned his first-ever visit to Bubba Raceway Park into a solid weekend of results in his first outing in the SawBlade.com backed Cooper Motorsports 360ci winged sprint car.

Thorson, who is the 2016 USAC National Midget Champion, hooked up with the Cooper Motorsports team thanks to a friendship between team owner James Cooper and Joe Dooling, who owns a midget Thorson pilots.

“The Coopers wanted to bring their car to Florida and James and Joe talked and I got the opportunity,” Thorson said. “We were fast all weekend, but battled with some brake issues and little miscues. It was a pretty good weekend though.”

The sprint car action during the USCS Series doubleheader began last Friday at Bubba Raceway Park, where Thorson placed fifth in a heat race and fourth in a B Main to roll off 21st in the feature event. He then charged to a fourth-place result.

“For the first time in that car and my first time at that track I thought we did amazingly well,” he said. “I have to hand it to my crew, they worked hard to get the issues fixed and gave me a great car.”

The following night started well for the Cooper Motorsports team with a third-place result in the dash followed by a second-place heat race finish. Thorson started 11th in the A Main and quickly moved toward the front.

“By Lap 8 we were fifth and I was just settling in and letting laps click off before making a move,” he said. “We cut a right rear tire on Lap 19. We changed it and got back out there and got back to 10th and then lost the brakes altogether.”

Thorson was credited with a 15th-place finish.

“I want to thank the Coopers for the opportunity,” Thorson said. “It’s a shame we fought the brake issues because I think we had a top-three if not top-two car on Saturday.”

The SawBlade.com sponsored Cooper Motorsports team is set to compete at the Ronald Laney Memorial King of the 360s this weekend at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, Fla., with John Carney II behind the wheel.
