Racers Battle Heat, Curfew, and Tough Competition at Flying H Drag Strip!
Summit Racing Mid-West Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service rolled into Flying H Drag Strip for the highly anticipated Summer Smackdown—the series' third visit to this fan-favorite facility. Flying H Drag Strip always welcomes racers and fans with open arms and that is apparent in the second largest car count of the season, for the series! With track temps soaring, the decision was made to move racing back to the early evening to provide the best racing possible. Sadly though, the evening concluded earlier than anticipated due to an extended oil cleanup and track-imposed midnight curfew. As a result, the points and pots were split for classes that were not finalized.
Stroud Safety Pro Mod presented by Larry Jeffers Race Cars: The Pro Mod class saw the second largest car count of the season as they battled for a $20,000 winner's purse. The series has seen more than 70 Pro Mods across the last three races, with 20 newcomers making their way to the lanes! The Pro Mod Class is heating up as the series prepares for the second half of the season. Robin Roberts clinched the #1 qualifying spot with a 3.6376. Shawn "Murder Nova" Ellington, Ron Muenks, Robert Davis, and Robin Roberts remained standing at curfew, splitting the pot. The bump spot was held by Chris Juliano with a 3.7734. Aaron Wells maintained his points lead with 303, while Ron Muenks moved into second place at 273 points, just ahead of Keith Goolsby at 270. Jacob McNeal holds fourth at 239 points, followed by a tight battle for fifth through seventh between Kallee Mills (223), Keith Haney (221), and Shawn Ellington (218).
Pro Mod Slammers: Seven Pro Mods filled the Slammers category. The showdown between Aaron Wells and Chris Russo is now scheduled to run during qualifying at the next event for the trophy.
J&A Service Funny Car: Mark Billington secured the Funny Car victory after Geoff Monise was unable to make the call to the lanes. Jim Whiteley topped qualifying with an impressive 3.6274. Whiteley now leads Billington in points, 175 to 149.
Compressed Air Supercharging Top Sportsman: Top Sportsman racers showed up and showed out with fourteen racers taking the bulbs during the weekend. Top qualifier John Baker led the pack with a strong 3.8247. Tina Pierce Racing and Tyler Wells were headed to the Finals as the curfew halted racing. Wells extended his points lead to 382, Mark Griffin moved up to second with 234, and Tina Pierce climbed to third with 230, pushing three-time champion Rod Moore to fourth with 224 points. Rod suffered a parts failure in Round One, complicating his chase for a fourth title.
Race Star Wheels Top Dragster presented by Icon Forged Pistons: The Top Dragster category, for the second time this year, had 17 cars in attendance! Terry Long paced the class as the #1 qualifier with a quick 3.8301. Randy Smith and Mark Grame advanced to the finals, but the curfew halted the final race. Pennington/Youngblood continues to lead with 367 points, while Kati Laughter (275 points) extended her advantage over reigning champion Jordan Eperjesi (271 points).
M&M Transmission Pro 4.20: The Pro 4.20 ranks continues to see great competition and increasing class count. The Summer Smackdown was the second largest showing of the season! James Ogden took home the class win over Darrell Hubbard, while Dave Pierce claimed the Skyview Racecars #1 Qualifier award with a near-perfect 4.2003. D Bar D Racing moved into the points lead at 266, surpassing previous leader Dave Pierce at 248.
Race Star Wheels Pro Jr: The Pro Junior Class saw two new names for the season with Cotton Koontz and Brooke Boye. Karlee Brundidge emerged victorious in the finals against top qualifier Kenzie Wells, claiming a well-deserved win and moving into the points lead with 215. Moo McClelland slid to second place with 150, and Kenzie Wells now holds third with 130 points.
Zimmerman Properties Sportsman Jr: With the largest racer list of the season, and filled with new names for the season, Jovee Brundidge raced to victory over Braxton Sebben, who led qualifying but fell just short in the final round. Eight racers campaigned in Sportsman Jr at Flying H Drag Strip! Brundidge maintains a commanding points lead with 215, while Sebben holds second place at 65 points.
Junior Slammers: Brooke Boye took home top honors, rounding out the winners' circle for the event.
One of the many great stories from the weekend came from Jeff Pierce. On his Facebook page, posting Jeff Pierce Race Car Tuning had a packed weekend, fielding five entries between personal and customer cars. Jeff Pierce’s own Purple Heart Pro Mod entry, piloted by Ron Muenks, saw strong performances, including a first-round win on a holeshot against fellow Jeff Pierce-tuned driver Kye Kelley. Muenks advanced further with another impressive 3.67-second pass before curfew halted the action. Ryan Bush narrowly missed the bump spot and encountered mechanical issues in Slammers competition, ending his weekend early. Jeff Pierce also tuned Steve Macklyn’s Top Alcohol Funny Car, which delivered consistent passes in the 3.65–3.70 range but ended prematurely with a first-round red light. Additionally, Dave Pierce took the Pro 4.20 #1 Qualifier honors with a perfect 4.200 run, making it to the semifinals before a 4.193 breakout run.
As we prepare for the summer break, many racers are already home performing car maintenance and taking some family time before a packed six weeks of racing when we return to racing in Sept.
The Summit Racing Mid-West Drag Racing Series, presented by J&A Service, continues as the series heads to US 131 Dragway for the Honor Credit Union Funny Car Nationals on Sept 6-7. The MWDRS returns to Flying H Drag Strip for the Fall Smackdown on September 19-20. And the 2025 season concludes with the Ronnie Hobbs World Finals/Throwdown in T-Town at Osage Casino & Hotel Tulsa Raceway Park on Oct 18-19!
