Surman Times It Perfectly to Score Last-Lap Victory

Batavia, NY — It was a hot and humid Friday night at the Genesee County Fairgrounds as Genesee Kartway returned to action for Race #4 after a brief eight-day break. With a busy pit area and plenty of storylines, fans were treated to another night of hard-fought, edge-of-your-seat racing.

The night kicked off with the Senior Lites feature, where Matt Barry of Albion, NY lined up alongside Paige Gayton on the front row. Barry jumped to the early lead and maintained it through the event’s only caution on lap 3, brought out by Jeff Lonnen. On the restart, Gayton stayed glued to Barry’s bumper, making several attempts to overtake him, but Barry never flinched. He held his line perfectly and secured his second win of the season in the division.

Next up was the Novice class, featuring racers ages 5 to 8. Earlier in the evening, a scary wreck between Kensley Martinez and Xavier Cook at the end of the heat race had everyone on edge. Thankfully, both drivers were okay and miraculously both karts were repaired and ready for the feature. Martinez, of Batavia, NY, started on the front row and wasted no time jumping to the lead. A caution on lap 7 briefly slowed the pace, but it wasn’t enough to stop her momentum. Martinez cruised to yet another win, remaining undefeated at Genesee Kartway this season.

The Junior 1 division produced a quick, caution-free run with Hendrick Dingeldine of Henrietta, NY taking command early from the front row. After notching a second and a fifth-place finish earlier this year, Dingeldine put it all together Friday night and earned his first feature win of the season in convincing fashion.

In what was undoubtedly the most electrifying race of the night, the Xtreme Budget Predator class stole the show. Jeffery Anstett and Joey Surman of Batavia, NY started on the front row, with Anstett jumping out to an early 6-kart-length lead. But cautions on laps 13 and 17 reset the field, giving Surman the chance he needed. The two battled with crossover moves and split-second strategy, culminating in a dramatic final lap. On the green-white-checkered restart, Surman dove low in turn two, pulled even on the backstretch, and powered ahead out of turn four to steal the win in stunning fashion. It was a masterclass in timing, patience, and execution from the young Batavia driver.

With no other competitors in Junior 2, Ryan Maher joined the Junior 3 field to keep the race alive. Maher and Chase Powers led the three-kart field to green. Powers led early, but by lap 5, Maher had worked his way around him and never looked back. Maher continues to be flawless this season—no matter which division he enters.

The final race of the night featured the Senior Heavy division, with Jeff Lonnen and Matt Barry leading them to green. Barry took early control of the race while Lonnen spun twice, bringing out cautions on laps 3 and 7. After the final restart, Barry stretched his lead and finally found victory lane after three consecutive second-place finishes. The win marked his first of the season in the Senior Heavy class.

Looking ahead, Genesee Kartway will be back in action on Wednesday, July 23rd during the Genesee County Fair with features only for all divisions starting at 7:00 PM. Once the karting wraps up, the big track will come to life for a special 100-lap enduro. With fair festivities in full swing and high-stakes racing on the schedule, it's a night you won’t want to miss!
